GEFNFL - 1996 Game Summaries
(Slow start to the season, Stats didn't get organized until week 5)
Subject: The Year in Review 1996
WEEK 1
Well, we kicked off the season at Glen Park last Friday,
with a light showing of 5 people. so we recruited from the
grade school and got 2 eight year olds to join the game.
(Aren't you glad you guys are so easily replaced?)
Statman took the day off, noting the there was no particular
leaders and those in the 4 foot height class scored as well.
I also learned a few things from the kids.
1. I look like Elvis. (This, from a kid who is wearing my
Dad's 1960's haircut and goes by the name Hershey Squirt)
2. Kids that are younger than Kyle are cockier than him.
3. Kids that are playing with their Dad (Cliff) are much more
reserved.
4. It's apparently against the rules to use your head to help
catch the ball.
5. A cocky kid can get under the skin of a mild mannered Bill Ray
enough for him to ask me to "Drill him with the next pass."
6. If your a kid, it doesn't matter if the adults are on your team
or the other team. Treat them all like scum.
7. Kids need Diversity Training more the we do.
We are trying for Buchner Park ASAP but suspect that next week
will still be at Glen Park. Bill is on vacation Wed., Thurs., & Fri.

WEEK 3 Rain out
WEEK 4
The City of Waukesha, afraid that the poor condition of
Buchner Park may cause us to move our team to another city, has
provided us with a new stadium! It's called Prairie Field.
Anyone know a sponsor willing to buy naming rights? It will
just cost a few beers at Mickey G's.
Gold kicked Blue about 10 to 6, Statman was on the losing side and
quickly lost track. Gold jumped ahead early to a 5 to 1 lead, Blue
matched
scores for most of the rest of the game. Closing the score by one or
two then
falling back again. If I shorted Southgate with any numbers I'm sure
I'll hear about it. If on the other hand I overstate them, I doubt
I'll get any corrections from him.
Stat leader:
Southgate 3 INT (one for a TD) 3 TD catches 2 TD Passes
Honorable mentions to:
Fred "Never say Die!" Coxey
Jim "The Arm" Puddington
Doug "I can still do this" Fedak
Lew (after a really long contract holdout)
Jon Leverence (returning from the wine & cheese league)
Play of the day was a 90 interception returned for a TD
by David Southgate. Jim Puddington had a similar play that
was not quite that long.
Schott out
PS: And now a message from Bill Ray:
Wasn't that a great game last Friday?
I want to thank Fred for the two 8 inch gashes on my butt -- my wife
didn't seem very convinced with the explanation. I want to thank
Doug and Tommy for their quantum physics explanation as to why the
bartender's breast appeared to get even bigger as the evening grew
long.
I want to thank Lew for making believe that he was tired and hurtin'
towards
the end of the game, just to make me feel better about my gasping for
air.
But most of all, I want to thank you for helping to keep the dream
alive.
Friday nights are back!!! ...and the Pack won -- LIFE IS GOOD!!!
WEEK 5
Yes, it was another great night for football! With a turn
out of only 6 (plus a wide flanker position I'll mention
later) Gold (Fedak, Ray, & Southgate) squeaked by Blue
(Coxey, Krisberg, Schott) with a sore of 8 to 7 by holding on
to a 1 TD lead all game.
Statman was up on his game, so here is the break down:
INT Passing TD Receiving TD Kick Return TD
Fedak 2 2 2
Southgate 2 5 1
Ray 3
Coxey 2 3
Krisberg 2 1
Schott 3 3
Cliff Pautz (Really Wide Flanker was running search patterns
1 to 3 miles east of the field trying to locate it.
Apparently, he was running a pattern that Bill Ray
gave him before the game started.)
Southgate was the stat leader again. The Play-of-the-Day was
actually about 5 plays by David Southgate. They were all
crossing patterns that he caught with one hand as the ball
was thrown behind him.
WEEK 6
Yes, it was another great night for football! The
"really wide flanker" position was played by Bill Jr.
(who also had the key for the lights) so we got off
to a late start.
Statman was up on his game, but Ms. Statman threw out
his notes twice before he finally recovered them. He was
also in Eagle River the last three days.
Gold beat Blue by 5 to 3 in a back and forth battle mostly
between the two 20 yard lines. Gold got the first 2 scores
Blue responded with 3 scores and Blue finished the game
with 3 more scores.

Coxey 2 1

Alexander 2 1
Sparacino 1

Sweinberg 1 1

Stat leaders were Puddington and Coxey.
Ron Bradee came out of retirement to make an interception
for a TD and catch another TD.
I thought I had the Play-of-the-Day with my
pass defense (using only my face), or my full speed
collision with Curt "the Invisible Wall" Lesmeister, or
even my one handed behind the back catch "Southgate style",
but then this play happened. Puddington fires a bullet
square into middle of Fred Coxey's back, it then skips over
him to be caught by the rookie Dan Sparacino. It was so well
executed it looked like a plannned play - I'm told it was plannned
to be a throw to Sparacino, who was supposed to pitch it back
to Fred. Either way it wins the Play-of-the-Day.
WEEK 7
Big showing for another great day of football with about 15 of us.
In keeping with our global mind set, we even recruited an English
Rugby player (Rob) who caught 2 TD passes and did some dandy
kick-offs.
Play-of-the-Day goes to Gary on a down, out and down that
he popped up and tipped to himself on the run. Great
play for a guy who missed training camp and this was his first
game of the season. Southgate had a similar one, but we expect
those kinds of plays from him, so Gary wins it hands down.
As the stats show Gold took Blue by 8 to 4. Apparently if
Blue wanted to even the sides out more, Blue should have been
playing against just Southgate by himself. Who, once again was
the Stat Leader and is looking like the prime candidate to
replace me as the organizer of these games.

WEEK 8
Wow, I think our weather for these games just gets better and
better.
Even our fan turn out is getting better with our attendance figures
at a record breaking number of three. No, not quite enough to
allow our touchdown makers to jump in the stands - yet.
Gold just slid by Blue with a 7 to 6 victory that ended my own
personal slump. With a player turn out of 9 we played mostly 4 on 4
with one man sitting out. There were even 2 rushing TDs!
Stat Leader was Jon Leverence with 2 passing, 2 receiving, and
1 rushing TDs.
The Play-of-the-Day goes to Larry Barikmo for the interception
returned 70 yards to the one foot line, changing direction several
times to make use of the whole field. I should also mention the
Gary Sima deserves the credit for finally catching him.

WEEK 9
Even though it was cold (~40 degrees), there was no wind, making
it another pleasent night for football. Blue and Gold battled evenly
for the first half, but Gold capitalized on 4 turnovers in the second
half that gave Gold a 9 to 5 win. Fan turn out was nil.
Stat Leader was Tom Sweinberg with 1 Passing, 3 Receiving, and
2 Rushing rushing TD's as well as 2 Interceptions. Of the rushing
TD's, one was a kick return, and the other was a called play from the
40 yard line.
Play-of-the-Day goes to both Tom Sweinberg and Bill Jr. each of
which had kick returns for touchdowns. it's a long way to get that
final 50 yards on a return, especially when most of it is sideways.
Another play that deserves mention was 4th down from the 45, with
Greg Lillegard at QB for Gold. He fires a nice pass to the 3 yard
line to pin Blue down near their own goal. Then he had to change
over to the Blue side, and saw what he had done to himself.

WEEK 10
BLUE jumped out to a 3 to 1 lead early, before falling to GOLD
3 to 4 mostly due to turnovers. Record breaking fan turn out
with attendence figures of 6. They even attempted 'The Wave' but
at the time there was only one person in the stands.
Statman says that there were 3 guys with 2 TDs, Fedak, Southgate,
and Schott. But Southgate gets the nod as Stat Leader with 3 INTs,
including the game winning INT for a TD.
There were two runner ups for the Play-of-the-Day. Number one was
a Sweinberg to Fedak 45 yard pass for a TD with the wind putting
a wild hook on the ball. Number two was a Southgate interception
for a TD from the 50 yard line. (Too easy, no one was close enough
to challenge him.) But I think I'll claim the Play-of-the-Day with
my 45 yard scramble for a TD mostly because it was the one play
that shouldn't have been possible.

WEEK 11
A surprisingly nice night to play football despite the
gloomy weather predictions. GOLD jumped to an early 3-1 lead.
Blue battled back to within a point and tied the game with dramatic
Tom Sweinberg interception returned 55 yards for a TD. Final
score was a 6-6 tie.
Stat leader was Edgar Alexander with 1 passing TD, 3 receiving
TDs, and 3 interceptions.
Plays-of-the-Day were a pair of tipped balls that scored TDs.
First, a Schott pass was tipped up in the end zone by the defender,
Edgar Alexander, then snagged by Chris Gilling for the TD. Then on
the next drive a 45 yard Bill Ray pass was tipped up by
the defending Jim Puddington, only to be gathered in by Edgar
Alexander for the TD.
How did Cliff & I get .5 Sacks? We both rushed in when Tom
Sweinberg went into the backfield for a hand-off, Bill Ray changed
his mind about giving it to Tom and they muffed the exchange.
Would that be a T.J. Rubley Award for a bad audible?
Statman wants to apologize to anyone who looked at the season
stats and felt shorted. He had no acurate stats for weeks 1-4,
and promises to do a better job next year. (I'm sure I had a
few INTs, but they must have been during those weeks as well)
Statman also wants to thank everyone for the colorful comments
on the years results, keep them coming.

WEEK 12
Ha! We fooled the weather again! However, the only snow
left in Prairie Park, was on the football field. Our fans
could stand in the grass while we played in the snow, that
is, if any of our fans had been were there. BLUE jumped
ahead on GOLD and never really let them back into it
winning by 5 to 3. And the regular season ends on the
frozen tundra of Prairie Park.
Statman slapped me on the back and said, "Cracked ribs must be
good for you! You've been waiting all year to make Stat Leader.
Despite playing though your injury, you ended with 2 passing &
2 receiving TDs. Edgar Alexander was chasing you with 1 passing,
2 receiving TDs & 3 INTs." Which is fitting, since the collision
with Edgar (in week 11) was the source of my cracked rib. I guess
Statman puts more weight on TDs than INTs.
Runner ups for the Play-of-the-Day include a Fred Coxey INT returned
55 yards for a TD, Bill Jr. with a 55 yard rushing TD from scrimmage
and
a 65 yard Bill Jr. kick return for a TD.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is Cliff's report on the Play-of-the-Day:
Play of the day, as seen from my vantage point...
Blue was driving towards another touchdown. 3rd and goal coming up.
Edgar takes the snap, drops back, looks left then right, nobody open.
But, wait.. what's this? Wayne is breaking free on a slant across the
middle. Edgar sees him and fires a rope right at the numbers. (Alot
like
Favre used to do) Touchdown you think.. Not so fast, what nobody saw
was the lurking Lesmeister accelerating towards the middle of the
field.
In a blink of an eye, faster than a speeding bullet, faster than
Fred can down a beer, (you get the idea), the ball, Wayne, and Curt
met
at the same spacial displacement at the same moment in time.
For a moment, two bodies were suspended in time and
certainly, no less than 4 feet in the air. Both participants, now
became the
unwilling property of GRAVITY.. What followed was inevitable, a
collision
with the earth of such magnitude that San Jose State recorded a
seismic event. The ball fell free, incomplete pass. After a few
heart-stopping moments both combatants were ready to do it again.
Happy to report that all walked away from the play. While rumors
abound
that the earth is now experiencing "orbital warp", it should only
serve
to lengthen the football season.
Reporting as I saw it... Cliff
