GEFNFL - 1997 Game Summaries
Subject: The Year in Review 1997
WEEK 1
Yes, it's football season again! We had a huge turnout of 15 players
and a fan turn out was a whopping 3 grade schoolers who thought they
were from Cleveland's Dog Pound. They even wanted to play with
Cliff's ball! Since sarcasm is wasted on kids, we ignored them
and they went away.
Cliff also had a gift for Curt (who didn't show). Maybe next time.
Gold nixed Blue, with a 3 to 2 score, as the veterans shook the
cobwebs out and the rookies adjusted to our game. A lot of
stalled drives and a few interceptions made for a low scoring game.
Dale Borowiak was the stat leader with 1 TD Pass, 1 TD Reception and
2 Interceptions.
I can't think of a Play-of-the-Day. Any nominations?
Here are the stats for those who had any. Since the rosters change
with players shifting in and out Jason appears on both Blue & Gold
teams. This is common and season totals should refect all scoring.
Many other player made great catches and contributed in other ways,
but these are the only stats I bother to keep.

PS: Thanks to Curt for showing me how to time the rush to be up to

wouldn't
have made the stats list.
How about the one handed catch in the end zone after it was tipped by
Dave Becker who was defending. I am not sure the individuals name

WEEK 2
The turn out of 13 players and great weather made for a great football
night, remember this when the snow flys. Despite falling to a 1-0
start
BLUE walked all over GOLD to the tune of 5 to 1. There were many long
drives that did not result in a score on both sides of the ball.
Dan Young was the stat leader with 2 TD Receptions, 1 Rushing TD and
3 Interceptions (one for a TD) and 1 Sack. Not bad for a rookie
walk-on.
Someone wanted the Play-of-the Day to be my throwing away the ball to
prevent a sack, but I think it goes to Dan Young for a 55 yard
interception returned for a TD.
Several firsts were recorded this game.
1) The first time a QB threw the ball away rather than take a sack.
(Yes, I was declared out of the pocket.)
2) The first time the 3' tall cones were involved in plays. On one
play
while running backward to catch the ball, Tom Sweinberg discovered
that he was "juuust a bit outside" the end zone cone with a rear
end
collision. Tom was also involved in the another "Cone Play". Tom
is
not numbered amoung the tallest of our players, so you can imagine
our
concern as he scored a TD going "spread eagle" over the cone
marking
the other end zone.
Rule Clarifcations:
1) A player that falls down with the ball, but is not touched, is NOT
considered down. Only fumbles are considered dead balls.
2) Double passing is allowed, but the first receiver must be no
further
upfield than the QB.
If there any good reasons for these rules not to apply, voice them
now.

WEEK 3 Summary
I was wrong, we had 13 "mudders" out of 16 show up for a wet game that
was
punctuated each quarter with a cloud burst of rain. Edgar Bennett
would
have been proud of us.
Blue beat Gold by 4 to 2.
Stat Leader was, I don't know, let's call it a three way tie with
DAVID SOUTHGATE, TOM SWEINBERG, LEWIS KRISBERG. I don't know if
TDs should weigh as much a INTs, but LeRoy Butler might think so.
Check out their numbers below.
Play-of-the-Day: To end a see-saw battle for the last TD, which would
signal the end of the game, Tom Sweinberg intercepts my pass to the
goal line and returns it the distance for a touchdown. His team's
obvious support on the run back was evident by their cheers. "Tom!
don't forget to bring the cones back when you done."
I thought Tom may have broken his own record set in 1994 at Ike Field.
But that field is 100 yards long so his 98 yard INT for a return still
stands. Tom, I'm calling it a 100 yarder on a 60 Yard field. It will
have to stand on its own on 60 yard Fields.

PS: Mrs. Statman has agreed to wash the jerseys, for a future draft
choice.
Since it is not to difficult, and because I got beat up for it, I will
attempt to list all players involved, despite their statistical
standings.

Subject: GEFNFL WEEK 4 Summary
WEEK 4
Yes, another great day for football! At the peak we had 14 fans
watching
the game. That would be a record breaking crowd. Most were in the
under 4 foot tall class.
Blue beat Gold by 8 to 6. There were 4 rushing TD's, very unusual for
the Friday League. Setting a new record. It was 7 to 6 when we
started
to play for last touchdown. (Last week, the last touchdown took 45
min.)
Blue scored quickly without interruption.
Injuries riddled the ranks as Passineau and Krisberg pulled up lame.
I won't be wearing a ring for a while due to a finger jam. I think
Cliff was dinged up a bit too.
Stat leader goes to Dave Becker with 2 passing TDs, 1 rushing TD, 2
INTs
both for a touchdown! Not bad for a guy with the nicest knee brace
I have ever seen.
According to conversation at Mickey G's afterward I was awarded the
Play-of-the-Day. Even with Dave Becker's 2 INT's for Touchdowns
from about the 50 yard line, and Sweinberg's falling catch at the
goal with a comeback pattern, they convinced me this was better:
The ball was fired at Cliff Pautz about 15 yards down on the left
flat,
it bounced off of his front side but ended up behind him in the
waiting arms of Ron Bradee. Cliff is trying to locate it, and Ron,
who missed training camp, is bobbling the ball trying to find the
handle
on it. All this time I was closing in on the ball. (Actually I was
trying to get back to the guy I was supposed to be covering.) When I
got close enough the ball bounced off of me and then off of Ron's
knee.
With gravity about to win this battle, I took one more stab at
grabbing,
and snatched a mere inch from the ground (and jammed my finger).
Still
in a crowd of mostly my team, I squirted out for another 10-15 yards.
Cliff said this was about when he figured out where the ball was.

WEEK 5
Blue again knocked off Gold by a score of 7 to 4 on a very warm
October
night. The water boy was the most popular guy on the field. (Thanks
Tom!)
The croud of fans peaked out at about 8. If we had Day Care
facilities we
might have been able to recuit Jim Puddington.
I couldn't choose the Play-of-the-Day so you pick them. Southgate had
about
3 alley-oop passes (60+ yards) for TDs down the middle. And Kyle had a
really
nice INT for a TD that I thought he would need a few blocks to make
the
return, but he got the 65 yard return all on his own.
Hit-of-the-Day goes to Byron Matthews, who didn't know I was blocking
him until
we hit each other helmet to helmet. My head has almost return to it's
normal shape.
Statleader was Dave Southgate, with 1 TD pass, 4 TDs receiving, 2 INTs
(one
of which was returned for a TD). We had to call the game early, so he
would
not break his own record of 8 TDs scored in a game. Next week it's
Gold vs.
Southgate.
Sorry if no one got the GAME IS ON message last week - the mail
gremlin bit me.
Lessons learned: If you want fish at Mickey D's don't ask Mandy.

Week 6 Summary
Sorry gang statman was on vacation Monday,
The Blue and Gold battle again on a beutiful night before
a jeering croud of about 8 or so. This was the first time I recall
the croud ever heckling us. Most of the comments appeared to be
directed a someone they called "Stud-Muffin". I'm almost positive
this
was directed a Dave Becker! But just to make sure, why don't some of
you who work with him, call him "Stud-Muffin" and see if he answers
to it.
Before I move on the the Tortise and the Hare battle, I would like to
point out that I did receive this message before the game friday:
----- Begin Included Message -----
From David.P.Becker@amermsx.med.ge.com Fri Oct 10 14:17:46 1997
To: schott@sol.med.ge.com
Byron, Dan, Dave, and I played softball together, maybe that can be
the
start of one team?
Also, Brian Quincy who played last week forgot to give you light money
so he gave it to me today to give to you. So, don't let me forget to
pay double tonight. See ya, Dave B
----- End Included Message -----
So Blue loaded up with 3 of the 5 statleaders so far (1 of which has
been
mentioned twice). As Becker passed out the blue jerseys to his team,
Gold
was heard to say "Do you want Sweinberg, too? You might need someone
fast!"
As expected Blue jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. At this point Gold
really
dug in. Using some tools seldom used in GEFNFL, Gold ran the ball!
Up to
and including a 4 yard TD run up the middle by Fred Coxey. Some of
the best
down field blocking I've seen in a while. And a guy on out on the
left flat,
who Gold called Mr. Containment, who kept Blue's pass plays short,
shut
down a 4th down Dan Young run, denying Blue a first down. This setup
the Coxey bootleg pass to rookie Bob Peterhans play that tied the game
at 4-4.
Play-of-the-Day goes to Fred Coxey. Not for what he did, but for what
he
gave up for his team. On a 4th and long from the ten, Fred knocked
down
a deep middle pass which would have been an easy INT. This gave Gold
great
field position. What Fred gave up on this play was the chance to be
tied
as stat leader.
Stat Leader was Dave Becker with 2 passing TDs and 2 INTs.

Week 7 Summary
Friday was a cool clear night night with zero fan turnout, guess they
aren't as tough as we thought. Gold picked up one on Blue with a
5 to 4 score that included 2 rushing TDs that Blue couldn't contain.
Jim "the Arms" Puddington was stat leader with 1 TD Pass, 2 TD
Receptions,
and 1 INT. My prediction of a big stat night was in error, it was
more
of a battle than I thought it would be.
The-Play-of-the-Day was actually setup by the previous play which
disproves the theory that you should never run the same play twice.
Both plays were a Kyle Hector bootleg right at the 10 yard line
with goal to go. On the first play, Kyle wanted to throw the pass,
however his center (me) stepped up to block the rusher (Bill Jr.)
and knocked him to the ground. The defenders were in man to man
coverage and had followed the receivers to the end zone. With a
clear running lane Kyle pulled up and threw an incompletion. On
the second play Kyle was determined to run, however Bill Jr. was
ready this time, and the defense seemed to swarm to the ball. Kyle
bootlegged right but most of the defense was waiting for him. A
couple of jukes latter Kyle was on his knees throwing to the two
Blue receivers all alone in the left end zone. The pass cleared me
an dropped into the waitings arms of Jim "the Arms" Puddington.
It worked better than Favre's knee pass!
Just so we don't forget about him this week Dave made the
following suggest for Naming rights to Prarie Park:

Wayne, a new proposal for the field name based on the number of leg

WEEK 8 Summary
The cold weather has started to settle in, but it has had little
affect
on the game, yet. The teams split up a little strange again. Gold
looked
pretty fast but no QBs. Blue had the QBs but looked short on speed.
Gold had the edge and came out on top with a 6 to 4 win.
Had trouble picking a Play-of-the-Day, but at the last minute at
Mickey G's, I decided to give to Bob Peterhans. He was making me look
good all game but started it out with Gold's first TD. On 4th down
at the 20 with goal to go I threw a terrible pass short of the end
zone
and way left of my target. Bob comes out of the endzone to get it.
He covered about 10 yards in the time the ball was in the air to make
the catch. His momentum carried him laterally for several yards along
the 1-2 yardline until he could side step back to the end zone to
score.
My apologizes go to Bian Boruki for blind siding him on a run play.
That was probably the Hit-of-the-Day.
There was a tie for Stat Leader. Bill Ray with 1 TD Pass, 2 TD
Receptions
and an INT, and Bob Peterhans with 1 TD Pass and 3 TD Receptions. Good
game, everyone got a piece of the action.

Andy,
I think we can muster up enough to play you guys.
How about in 4 weeks? I'll pass this message on to the other
guy that helps to coordinate our Friday night games to get his buy-in,
but I'm sure he won't have a problem with a friendly game.
Only one stipulation: You 'll have to play by our rules. We
play one-hand tag, no tackling or cheap shots. 6 or 7 man teams.
There's a 3 count and then a rush. Only the QB is allowed in the
backfield -- you can have as many people back there, but you will not
get a 3 count. The QB can run but as soon as he moves forward, the
defense can rush. There's double-passing -- the first pass must be
behind the point that the QB is at, when he releases the ball. There
are no fumble recoveries -- once the ball is dropped -- it's
dead...this
happens on kickoff returns quite a bit. We don't usually have field
goals or extra points. Oh, our field is reserved at Prarie Park in
Waukesha from 5:30 to 8:00 -- it's lighted. We divide up the cost
($30)
by the number of players...maybe that could be the prize of the game
--
losers pay for the lights. The field is marked. There's only one
first
down though, at mid-field.
We really try hard to play competitively but to have fun and not
get hurt -- hey, some of us are old and heal slowly!
What do you think? If you can get 10-12 guys, I think we could
have a great time.
Bill

WEEK 9 Summary
A surprisingly warm night and no rain made for an enjoyable night of
football. Both of our fans used this night to take out their
frustrations on each other and their dad, Brian Borucki.
BLUE and GOLD fought it out to a 3-3 tie, and again everyone
contributed
something to the stat sheet.
To set up the Play-of-the-Day I have to explain that Curt was hassled
for not wanting to play in the rain. Now I've seen Curt play in the
rain so I defended him. Curt's glasses easily fog over. My response
was that it is extremely difficult to catch a football with your face.
Well Curt was determined to prove me wrong. With 4th and 20 to go to
the goal, I lofted one into the end zone. Curt succeeded in making
contact with the ball 3 times before falling on his back and having it
fall, yes, directly on his face. A touchdown need not be pretty to
count.
Almost forgot, Bill Ray and Fred Coxey tied as Stat Leaders.

WEEK 10 Summary - The TLP Challenge:
The TLP Challenge: The stakes... Loser pays for the lights ($30).
13 players showed for the Blue & Gold and about 10-11 on the TLP team.
With youth and speed on their side the TLPs struck first with a quick
touchdown. Gold (which is really Blue & Gold combined) with only
experience and a solid game plan, answered the call with 4 unanswered
touchdowns! With the use of a 2-play per huddle offense, massive
substitutions with precalled plays, and the secret weapon of zone
defense (producing 6 INTs) it wasn't until the late in the game that
the TLPs scored again. Using a "no-huddle-get-open-offense" they
produced a drive provided the last TD. Final score 4-2. It may
have been a little more loopsided have a few 4th and goal passes been
completed.
Bill Ray was statleader with 3 TD passes an an INT. (But Bill wants
an * by it because we forced him to QB most of the time.)
Even with some TLP input the Play-of-the-Day was a tie.
1) From our own 40, Bob Peterhans in the slot position had the swing
pass up the sideline route the wideout was running a Slant in. At
the 50, Bob broke free, and Bill Ray perfectly feathered the pass
into his hands. With no real shortage of speed, Bob turned it on
getting into the end zone.
2) On forth and long for a first down, I cranked a pass down the
middle
trying to hit Bill Jr. on the slant. I did, but then it hit the
defender,
and Bill Jr. again (I think). Finally the ball broke free of the pair
and made a mad dive for the ground, but Doug Fedak makes a diving save
in the muddy center field with not an inch to spare! Firstdown!
Thanks, Doug for saving what would have been a dismal drive.
Mike Kotnour had the hit of the day driving the blocker back into the
QB.
I believe the pass was complete anyway but it was a nice effort.
All in all it was a good game. The TLPs were good sports, I'm a sure
rematch was mentioned once, but I for one would rather play with them
instead of against them.
For those of you who missed the enertainment at Mickey G's, Tom
Sweinberg
sang two John Cougar Melecamp songs the "Authority Song" as a solo and
"Wild Night" duet with Stephanie (the karioki chick)... (Hey, I can
spell
it worse than they can.)
A midst the feastivities, statman lost the stats. (but saved the
playbook)
Rumor has it, he gave out an autograph on the back of the stat sheet.
Anyway the following is the best I could at recovering the stats, I
think
I'm missing a sack if it's yours, tell me, I'll update the yearly
stats.
Attention blue jersey holders, forward them out to me ASAP.
Feel free to forward this to the TLPs.

WEEK 11 Summary
Ouch!
Not sure If we should call this a game or not. We started late,
about 6:15 and were done by 6:35. (Bill, as far as Waukesha Park
Rec. goes this was NOT a game. Moneys collected will go for the
blue jersey's, of which we are short.)
We started out playing 4 on 3, with one player switching sides
so the offense would have the extra guy to QB. Scoring was rampant
with
so few players on the field. But, after about few plays and a sack
Curt was out with a cramp in his calf, then it was 3 on 3. It
wasn't long before a Bob Peterhans came up lame, with a hamstring
pull. Then it was 3 on 2, and a little bit too silly, so we called
it a night. The best score of the night was us at Mickey G's when
I scored a rare photo of Tom Sweinberg singing with Stephanie.
(known by us as Karioki Girl) Look for it on our GEFNFL webpage...
someday.
I got the Play-of-the-Day, I turned out the lights... Actually
Curt Lesmeister and Bill Ray Jr. should get mentioned because the each
got
sacks in a no-rush defense. (muffed hikes)
Jason Carter was Statleader with 2 TD receptions and one TD rushing.
I've listed individual stats only (not by team) because we switched
around so much I couldn't tell you who was on what team. For the
record
Blue beat Gold by 3 to 1. I threw the only touchdown for Gold to Bob
Peterhans on the first play but ended up on Blue.

WEEK 13 - The Turkey Bowl,
With a whopping 3 on 3 game at Eisenhower it was the under 30
crowd in Blue and the over 30 guys in Gold. With Gold winning
with a 3 to 2 margin. We marked the field at 60 yards, full
size was going to be too big for 6 guys
Lew Krisberg was statleader with 1 TD pass, 1 TD rec., 2 INTs and a
SACK.
The Play-of-the-Day was a 10 yard Bill Jr. pass to Kyle Hector with
Bill
Ray on the coverage. As Bill closed for the tag Kyle pitched back to
Bill Jr. who finished off the next 20 yards for the TD. Bill's tag
was
close to the mark and we had a video camera rolling but the action
took place out of the field of view so our first chance to use instant
replay was inconclusive.

We need more pictures for the Web page...
SUPER BOWL
On a field of ice covered with trampled snow, the BLUE and GOLD
warriors
pounded out the last game of the season - The Super Bowl. Yes, it was
the
Fozen Tundra of Prairie Park! Camera-boy took video until 2 batteries
froze up - then joined the teams on offense late in the game just to
stay
warm. Gold beat Blue with a score of 3 to 2, and Mickey G helped us
celebrate by having a live band for the post game celebration.
Plays-of-the-Day, again I have a couple to mention.
The first play of the game was the old banana play with Tom
Sweinberg
underneath. He was supposed start underneath then break long, but he
optionally continued the route and I pickup the read and dropped the
pass over his shoulder for about a 70 yard TD.
The other was David Southgate's shoestring grab of a thirty yard
pass
down the middle. We are still not sure how we caught it.
The long dormant Edgar Award (for the most outstanding effort in a
play that was not successful) goes to 2 recipients in this game.
One to David Southgate for the diving in the snow in the back of the
endzone for a pass that was just out of reach.
And to Nicholas Schott (the age 11 rookie, out of Eagle Elementary
School) for the near TD catch, just inches from the goal line.
With such a low scoring game, it took only 2 marks in a statisical
category to make stat leader. That would be Bill Ray, Bill Jr., and
Tom Sweinberg. They are all Super Bowl MVPs. Next year they will be
playing for Oakland.
Big thanks to everyone who made this season possible. It's some of
the
best fun I have all year. I'll ping you again in a couple of days
when
I get the pictures and year end statisics together and on the web
site.
If you guys want to do a Pro-Bowl, you will have to work up a demand

there and going at it one more time. The snow was well trampled in
the middle but the wide receivers found the 6-8 inches of snow with
a light ice crust to be very difficult to run in on the outside.
With a turn out of 15 people it got crowded at times. The shortage of
blue jerseys forced Gold to do all the substitions to keep the sides
even.
(If you still have one, send it to me a EA54 or call me at 647-4551)
Gold scored first, to which Blue answered with 3 TDs. Trying to
end the game with a final TD failed, as we had no score ing the
final 1/2 hour or so. Scoring became very difficult after a while.
The final score was Blue by 3 to 1.
Play of the Day goes the Jeff Pautz and Jason Carter. On 3rd and 20
to goal,
Blue kept 3 guys in to block me, sending out only 3 receivers to be
covered
by 6 gold defenders. I made no attempt to get past the blocker and
only tried
to make sure they didn't run. But Jeff had all day to wait for his
receivers
to do something. Finally, Jason broke free in the end zone for the TD
on a very
nice pass by Jeff.
Jeff Pautz was Stat Leader with 2 TD passes, 1 INT, and a Sack.

Rumor has it there may still be interest in another game, if the
weather holds.
We could call it the El Nino Bowl...
