GEFNFL - 1998 Game Summaries
Subject: The Year in Review 1998
WEEK1
We had a light turnout of 7 players for the first week of the season.
Bill Ray was our swing offensive guy. Blue was dominating most of the
game which resulted in a 5 to 2 victory for Blue.
The-Play-of-the-Day goes to Tom Sweinberg for the 50-60 yard return of
the interception he got at his own 10 yard line. It wasn't so much
the play as the number of people that fell down trying to tag him as
he juked his way up the field.
Stat Leader was Tom Sweinberg with 1 passing a 3 receiving TDs. It
could have been Chris Gilling, but he passed on an easy interception
of one my throws in favor of field position. He just let it purposely
fall through the ring he made with his arms.
I want to give Gary Sima an honorable mention for throwing some of the
nicest long balls I have ever seen him throw! I've been playing this
game since 1980, I don't remember exactly when Gary first played but I
was so sure he couldn't throw that far, that I was breaking of my
coverage early. Good work Gary!

Week 2:
It is fitting that Cal Ripken ended his consecutive game streak the
same weekend that I did. Anyone care to beat 27 consecutive GE Friday
Night Football games?
If I had to vote for player of the game it was definitely Dave. He
scored on both sides of the ball and was constantly a threat of
defense. PLUS the guy's got a body on him (we played skins Vs shirts)
-- he's pumped! Gee, I don't think I meant to say that last part.

Week 3
Yes, Prairie Park, the lights, and a great turnout of an even dozen
players on a warm, mosquito filled night made for a fast moving game.
Gold jumped out to a 5 to 0 lead on Blue before Blue requested
changing to a traditional leather ball instead of the "The Gripper"
rubber football. Four out of the next 6 TDs went in Blue's favor to
create the slightly more respectable results of a 7 to 4 Gold win.
Karaoki girl now works at Mickey G's.
Play-of-the-Day: There were three nominations.
The first was with Chris Gilling as the designated rusher, he reached
up to swat down the pass that was flying over his head and managed to
tip it to himself for the interception! Then took off to gain 20~30
yards giving Blue a much needed lift early in the game. I think
that's the first time I've ever seen the rusher intercept.
The second one I forgot. I think it was that 60 yard TD pass from
Kyle Hector to Brian McEathron. I pulled a Buckley and figured Kyle
couldn't throw it that far. Brian made an outstanding grab at the
back of the end zone.
The third one was the final play of the game (for which those who play
understand, usually end on a score). Gold was still out in front 7 to
3, when we called out next score ends the game. Gold had the ball
with half of the field to go for a TD. Blue dug in, saying let our
team make that final score. Going for it all Gold threw to the 5 yard
line only to be grabbed by the long outstretched arms of Mike Peters!
I think you can see were this is going, Mike then puts his long legs
to work returning it the full 95 yards for the TD!
Stat Leader
Bill Ray Jr . with 3 TDs receiving and 1 TD Rushing
Kyle Hector gets a mention for 3 TD passes. By far, his best QB
performance to date.
Chris Gilling also gets a mention 2 TD passes and 2 INTs but again let
an easy INT go in the end zone on 4th down. This time he could have
caught it for the stat, because a touch back would have put the ball
back to the same spot (the 20 yard line).

Week 4
The Blue and Gold clashed last Friday resulting in a 2 - 2 tie. In a
game that was shortened by steadily increasing drizzle to all out
rain. Your grid iron warriors hung in there long enough to call it a
game. I was the swing guy on offense, which may explain why neither
team won. On the other hand, neither team lost.
Mickey G is trying to help us find some reversible jersey's (blue and
gold preferably) for us regulars (or fans) to buy cheap. Leaving the
mesh jersey's for the occasional players.
Kyle Hector pulled in the Stat Leader Title with a TD pass, reception
and a interception.
Nothing really stands out as a Play-of-the-day.

Not enough interest.
Week 6
On an unusually warm Friday night, Blue mercilessly pummeled Gold in
"Viking-like" fashion to the score of 7 - 3. Gold, without a speed
guy, could not find a coverage that contained Southgate without
leaving too much open. Blue got up 5 - 1, and even that didn't prevent
them from adding late arrival, speedster Tom Sweinberg to their
roster. This further complicated Gold's desperate attempt to stop the
bleeding. Of course, if Gold had successfully finished it's long
drives or 4th and short situations it wouldn't have looked so dismal.
Either way, it'still the most fun I have all year, which probably
doesn't too say much for the rest of my life...
Cliff Pautz and David Southgate tied as Stat Leaders with 3 TDs and a
interception a piece. The only difference between them was Cliff
threw all 3 of his, and Southgate's were all receptions.
Play-of-the-Day goes to Gary Sima for a 45 yard return of an
interception for a TD. A distant second nomination came in for the
Gold pass that was tipped twice by Blue defenders before it was
snatched by the intended reciever of Schott.
The long dormant Edgar Award, for outstanding effort despite the
futile results was revived for two players. One for Curt Lesmeister's
near interception with 95 yards of green in front of him, and other
for the 4-5 knock downs that should have been interceptions by me.

Week 7
It was another outstanding night for football last Friday. Gold
grabbed an early lead, that it never gave up. Blue admitted to having
difficulties covering Southgate and Klegg, but claimed to get things
under control and managing to pull with in two TDs before Miller Time
with the score of 6-4. If Blue's defensive change's did help, it may
be worth remembering for the TLP game, that has yet to be scheduled.
Gold switched to a modified zone that I believe is worth remembering
as well.
Rick Klegg supplanted David Southgate as Stat Leader with 3 TD passes
2 TD receptions and a interception ending Southgate's control of the
title when he shows up.
Play-of-the-Day goes to Greg Lillegard for a 45 yard return of an
interception for a TD. Doug Fedak also had a nice TD 20+ reception a
crossing pattern where the short defender (me) on the right side could
not make the play due to the decoy route and down field blocking by
Bill Ray.
The seldom awarded Hit-of-the-Day, goes to Rick Klegg and David
Southgate. This is not a popular award, because involves some level
pain. Note that Klegg and Southgate were on the same team and playing
defense at the time. Klegg had the short left zone and Southgate the
deep safety position in a 3-1 defense. Both accelerated to the ball
that was thrown to a fly pattern on that side. As you know, 2 objects
can not occupy the same space at the same time, much less the three
objects that made the attempt. Klegg, Southgate and the ball all
arrived with total disregard to the others. Annihilation, is the word
I'm looking for. The lacerations on Southgate's face are from Klegg's
outstretched hands, as Klegg looked back over his shoulder for the
ball. Klegg's wind returned after several minutes of official time
out. Both were limping for about a play or two before getting back
into the swing of things again.
I tried to find a way to mention my 70+ yard TD reception of a Klegg
pass on a right side fly pattern but couldn't think of a category to
put it in...

Week 8
It was another outstanding night for football last Friday. The rain
held off but the field was muddy even though the ground keepers waited
to roll the tarp until just before kick off. The field conditions
affected the receiver routes all game, making for few sharp cuts or
fakes. The sides were a little thin with us starting with 3 on 3
until Curt showed up making it 4 on 3. We all took turns switching
between the TLP team and the Blue team on offense after that point.
It was kind of a see-saw battle with Blue coming out on top with a
final score of 5 to 4 by virtue of making the last score before
"Mickey G Time". (The TLPs decided not to join us
afterward...something about saving money by going home to eat, however
Mrs. G bought our dinner!)
Tom Sweinberg and Christopher Mullins tied as Stat Leaders with 2 TD
passes 2 TD receptions.
Play-of-the-Day goes to Tom Sweinberg for an audible. Tom decided
that Curt's already had 2 TDs and audibled for Curt to exchange routes
with me, making me the primary receiver for the TD that followed.
That cost Curt a tie with the Stat Leaders.
A second nomination came in for the Play-of-the-Day last week. With 4
on 3, the TLPs pulled out the double pass play and Brenner to
Wagovich, and then a 50 yard, Wagovich to Brenner pass for the
apparent TD. The defense looked around to see who had blown the
coverage when we realized that we had no one to cover the QB, because
we were a man short... Despite brilliant play calling, that
exploited a huge weakness, it was called back as illegal. These guys
are obviously management material...
Against my best wishes, the Hit-of-the-Day award trend continues this
week. This time it goes to Andrew Brenner, who drove his head, neck
and shoulder into the goal post, which completely spun him around
while chasing what would have been an outstanding TD. I think he may
have seen it coming and pulled up, because he poppped right up for the
next play and did not think he was Batman.

Week 9
Well the field dried up and it was quite a bit colder, but that didn't
stop Southgate from playing in shorts. Lots of INTs (about 11) this
game probably setting a record for the most in a game. (I may have
missed one or two in the stats.) It was another see-saw battle with
the final TD deciding the game for BLUE with a score of 6 to 5. This
marks only the second time Southgate was on the losing team. He says
it was because I was on his team. But I need to remind him that it was
he that just fell in the end zone as a sure interception sailed over
his head for the winning TD.
Bill Ray Jr. was Stat Leaders with 2 TD passes 2 TD receptions and an
INT, only because I count TDs higher than INTs or Sacks. Trailing
right behind him was Todd Clegg and Tyler Jones who both loaded up on
INTs. Interesting to note, that Fred Coxey was only short a Rushing
TD from getting a stat in all 5 categories.
I have two nominations for the Play-of-the-Day:
1) The Southgate rushing TD from about the 30 yard line. He may
have got in all by himself, but I need to remind him about the
outstanding blocking by the left side receivers (Brian Quincy and
myself) who pushed the defensive backs to the right side of the field.
2) The 2 yard screen play to Tyler Jones that he turned into a 55
yard touchdown by faking out multiple defenders on the way. The
defense was seen picking up their jocks and shoes after that one.
There was no Hit-of-the-Day, however I do have an injury report.
David Southgate's black eye is much better, but he did have to have a
doctor straighten out some cartilage in his nose (with a Dremel
tool?). I sprained the middle finger on my right hand on Tyler Jones
back. Fred Coxey is wearing a bruse on his sternum that I placed
there with one of my Favre-live pass imitations. Brian Quincy came up
lame, but managed to go to the bar afterwards.
NOTE: I believe the game against the TLPs is this coming Friday. Bill
Ray can't make it so I hope they make arrangements with me. This was
a better week for them, the next week is deer hunting so I suppose we
have to accommodate the TLPs and have it this week. We can still play
a good game without out best signal caller...

Week 10 - the TLP Challenge
Once again the GEFNFL pounded it out with the TLPs with about a dozen
guys on each team we played a game of 8 on 8. I approached this game
with a few concerns about the QB position, which had none of our
regular aces. (Yes, Cliff that does include you.) The first play
ended those concerns, as Patrick Brown stepped up with a 65 yard TD
strike to Todd Clegg. I was more than willing to allow him to QB most
of the night after that. That was quickly followed by a Gary Sima
interception which set the tone for your GEFNFL Warriors. Our
strength against most challengers is still seems to be the zone
defense, which ended several long TLP drives with interceptions. The
first ever safety was recorded by the TLP's Jason Schneck, so the
final score ended up as 6 to 4 1/3 with the GEFNFL coming out on top.
Play-of-the-Day goes to Patrick Brown, not for any of his many TD
passes but for his interception on the 1 yard line that he returned to
the opposite 2 yard line for a 97 yard return. (I don't remember any
TLP complaints about one-handed tag on that play, but that was a hell
of an effort by the TLP who made that tag. Was that you Tyler?)
Stat Leader was of course Patrick Brown with 6 TD passes and 2 INTs.
The next closest competitor was Kyle Hecker with 3 TD receptions and 2
INTs.
No injuries, that I know of, to report. Kyle pulled up lame, but
later returned to action.
I think most people enjoyed the game which is, after all, why we do
this. I'd like to extend my thanks to those that showed their
appreciation for effort I put into organizing the event. Since Andy
was the only TLP to show up at Mickey G's, we made him drink that
extra pitcher of beer that Mickey bought for us.
If there are anymore observations to add to the historical record send
them in.
