GEFNFL - 1999 Game Summaries

Subject: The Year in Review 1999

Week 1

Beautiful night for football, which I am sure is why we ended up with
about 12 people to play a game, when I was seriously considering
canceling it for lack of interest. I can't stress how important it is
that you let me know if your going to make it. I can only use the
votes I actually get, to make the decision prior to game time. For
you newer folks the field still cost us $30 a night (no inflation in 5
years), so I collect $3 a head, to cover the bill from Waukesha Park
and Rec. If you haven't paid it's OK to pass it on through some of
our more regular players, (Bill & Bill Jr. Ray, or Cliff to name a
few) or contact me directly to make arrangements.

Gold beat Blue 7 to 5 in a surprisingly long game for the first week -
yes, we even used the lights. The teams surprisingly seemed fairly
evenly matched is a see-saw battle that ended in Gold's favor only
because of a few stalled drives by Blue late in the game. Everyone
got something on the stat board. No, none of the quarterbacks were
seen crying at the post game press conference at Mickey G's. Did
anyone else get any nasty itchy bug bites that night, or did I take 6
bites for the rest of you?

Play of the Day was a screen pass from Nick Schott to Tyler Jones, who
then throws a perfect 25 yard strike to Chris Gilling in the end zone.

Stat Leader was Mike Riekkoff, with 4 TD passes, 1 INT, and a Sack.
Not bad for a guy who held out last season.

Week 2

Outstanding night for fishing, I caught 6 Bass over 18 inches and one
Walleye of 23 inches... Opps, that was my weekend review. Outstanding
night for football! With a somewhat spirited game, that I think
resulted from the sides being very even. Gold got ahead 4 to 2, then
Blue made a two touchdown run that tied the score at 4 to 4. With the
call of "Next touchdown ends the game" we proceeded to play a see-saw
battle for the next hour for that last score. It was several long
drives drives, turning it over on downs or INTs, before Gold finally
scored the go ahead TD, winning 5 to 4.

Play of the Day: Blue's 4th touchdown was actually scored twice (At
least in my book. Since I have the only book, here is my take). I
believe Dave Dubberstein was QB for these two plays. First Jamie
Hamilton caught a pass seven yards deep on the right and pitched it
out to Southgate who quickly run down the sidelines for the TD. This
was called back for being a forward lateral. I was behind Jamie, and
chased Southgate to the endzone and it looked good to me (or I
wouldn't waste my time chasing Southgate). By the time I got back
from the endzone (and caught my breath) the play was being redone.
Despite my argument, and our unspoken rule, that close calls should go
to the offense, it was down over. On nearly next play, it was a deep
throw to the center of the endzone, tipped by Tyler Jones, through the
hands of another Gold defender, only to land in Dave Southgate's hands
for three steps before he lost it. We called that one a TD on the
grounds that Southgate had possession long enough. I believe that both
of these plays combine for the Play of the Day.

Stat Leader: Goes to Tyler Jones at 3 TD Passes, and 3 INTs. (Even if
one of those INT might be a Sack, he'd still be stat leader)

Tyler, I have some confusion in my notes. Did you have any Sacks?
Your Sacks and INTs got all tallied together as INTs.

Week 3

The weather held long enough for your GEFNFL Warriors to get another
game under their belt. (It didn't rain until we got to Mickey G's).
With 5 on 5 the battle seemed fairly even, but Blue got and kept the
lead by virtue of it's overwhelming interception totals of 6 INTs
(including one for a TD) to Gold's 1 INT. Blue ended up on top, with
a score of 8 to 5. Nice to see a few of the regulars show up. It was
a night of good sideline runs, multiple tip drills, awkward blocks,
falling receivers, and I even got accused(complimented?) of "looking
fast, tonight"! Thanks Billy, that made my day. The play that
prompted that remark, was my 1 yard run for a first down, that turned
the corner, and went for another 48 yards down the side line to about
the 2 yard line.

Play of the Day: It was Gold's first play from scrimmage from their
own 1 yard line. It was a Lew Krisberg pass to Jamie Hamilton on the
left side for about 10 yards. Jamie turned it into the play of the
day, by turning it up the sidelines for the entire distance. A 99
yard TD! It has been quite sometime since we had one that long.

A runner up to the Play of the Day, was Dave Dubberstein's
interception, returned 55-60 yard for a TD. Earning him the asterisk
in the INT column.

Stat Leader: Dave Dubberstein with 1 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TD, 1
Rushing TD, and 3 INTs including the one for a TD. He nearly got the
coveted quintet of stats (something in every column). In the attempt
at getting the sack, he nearly pulled in the rare GEFNFL Safety.

*INT for a Touchdown

Week 4 - Cancelled

Week 5

We had a surprisingly large turnout giving us the nearly unmanageable
8 on 8. This tends to give the edge to the defense which became
obvious later in the game. It also makes play calling difficult with
that many receivers and blocking the extra rushers make the game a bit
more physical. A season record of 4 fans showed up for the event.
Even the Channel 4 Friday Football Flights knew something big was
going on, as the helicopter paused for a second look. Another see-saw
battle was in order with many long drives, but the real difference the
game was the 2 interceptions for TDs that Gold snatched from Blue,
while Blue was backed up near their own end zone. Final score was 6
to 3 in Gold's favor. It turned out to be the longest game in the
history of the GEFNFL. Not by choice, but "The Curse of the Last
Touchdown" seems to be in full force. The chronology looked something
like this:

    6:00 PM - Kickoff
7:45 PM - With score of 6 to 3, we called for next score to end
the game.
8:00 PM - Friday Football Flight Helicopter flew bye.
8:30 PM - Last of our fans left, when they wouldn't submit to a
weapons search.
9:15 PM - Surrender with no further scoring.

We played 1 hour and 30 minutes with several long drives, lots of
shots at the end zone and still without a score. At that point an
unconditional surrender was called.

I apologize to the players for the length of the game. One of my
flaws is that I hate calling an end to a party, but we have been over
using the lights. I think at around 8:00 PM we should call for last
drive.

Play of the Day: After much hashing it out at the bar afterwards, we
thought that there was no nominations for the play of the day.
However, after later reflection the difference in the game was the two
interceptions that went for touchdowns. Both play were pretty much
carbon copies of each other. Only the names were changed to protect
the guilty. Mike Riekoff and rookie Denny Lau both jumped on 10 yard
passes from Blue's end zone and were in for TDs before anyone could
react.

Stat Leader: Ken Riekoff had the most stats with 1 receiving TD, 1
rushing TD, and 3 sacks. Now since one of those sacks was a
"Technical Sack" (meaning that he was the rusher on a muffed hike), so
I will also mention the that Mike Riekoff had 2 passing TDs, and 2
INTs (one for a TD). So they are both in for the Stat Leader title.

Thanks to the extra contributions toward the jerseys and the extra
turnout, I shouldn't need to collect any more.

Week 6

We had a surprisingly large turnout given the wind chill factor ending
up with 6 on 5 most of the game. So we rotated a player for an extra
guy on offense. This explains why names (and stats) may be in both
lists. We nixed "The Curse of the Last Touchdown" by calling for last
TD or a one drive per team which ever comes first. Gold scored that
last TD, but still losing to Blue by a final score 6 to 5.

YES Randy, I do have your football...

Play of the Day: Fred Coxey caught a pass on a 10 yard square in, over
the defender, then rumbled the remaining distance for a 75 yard TD.
All of this with the defender and a safety in hot pursuit. (Yes, I'll
admit to being that defender.)

Stat Leader: Mike Riekoff had 4 passing TDs, and 1 receiving TD, and
Dan Brown with 2 passing TDs and 3 receiving TDs share the title.

Injuries: Hey Bob, nice cleat mark on my leg! My kids were very
impressed! It turned into a half dollar sized scar in the middle of a
hand sized bruise. Not bad considering we were on the same side...

WEEK 7

Sorry this was so late, I went to the Monday Night Game and needed a
day of mourning. I still don't have my voice back...

Friday, on the other hand, was a great night for football, as our mild
weather has continued to hold. We even confused the Fox 6 Remote Van
with our lighted field and huge fan attendance of about 5-6 (if you
count the dog). They must have been looking for the Waukesha South
game when they pulled into Pairie Park. We tried to encourage them to
set up, but they left as quickly as they came.

I'm a little foggy on the details at the time of writing this, but
here goes. Blue jumped to an early lead with the help of a few early
INTs. Gold dug in and fought back and got ahead with help of 4
unanswered INTs. Fact is, the only balls thrown my way, were by the
opposing QB. At the final gun, it was Gold 6 - Blue 4.

Play of the Day: Mike Riekoff for pulling an Elway and rejecting the
Blue jersey of the team that drafted him and taking a Gold one
instead. Must have been a contract dispute.

Stat Leader: Mike Riekoff for 1 passing TD, and 2 receiving TD, 1
rushing TD and 1 INT.

Injuries: Showing off my bruse from last week's game nearly qualified
as a play of the day. At least for all of the oos and ahs it got.

Week 8

The weather continues to hold out for our games, fans totaled about 5
(the guy didn't walk his dog or we would have had a season record),
but the news crews seem to have learned their lessons. Blue pretty
much controlled the game from the get go. It got a little bit rough
out there for a while, I know I'm wearing a few new bruises. The game
tamed down after several people left early. With my son (Nick Schott)
and my brother in-law (David Pribyl) being in the game, I much
preferred the later part of the game to the more intense first half.
(I didn't want to bring them home broken.) Blue won with a final
score of 8 to 5. Even though they were ahead at the end, Blue wanted
a final series, which Gold's - Tom Sweinberg ended with a 35 yard
interception returned for a TD.

NOTES:

Did anyone pick up a spare Wilson football 2 weeks ago - my smooth one
is missing?

I've been working on the history of this league. If you have any
inputs, or would like to see what I have so far, let me know. Cliff
and Bill have been a big help so far.

Play of the Day:

I'm going to claim the play of the day. From about the mid-field
stripe, Dave Dubberstein threw me a nice 10 yard square in. I took it
inside just far enough to avoid Mike Riekoff, who was playing me a
little too deep. Then turned it up field just short of running into
Fred Coxey's outstretched hands. For the remaining 30 yards, I outran
the corner back from the far side to the end zone. It seemed rather
improbable that I would make it to the end zone but I guess everyone
catches a break once in a while.

Three other plays were considered for the play of the day. One was
Tom Sweinberg's INT for a TD mentioned above. The second was Chris
Mullens for paying his three dollars for the game a couple weeks ago,
when he said he would show, but didn't make it. Wow a TLP with
integrity! Who would have thought it possible (just teasing). The
third was Nick Schott's (my 13 year old son) stealth sack of Mike
Riekoff.

Stat Leader:

Again Mike Riekoff pulls off the stat leader with 3 TD passes, 2 TDs
receiving and a sack. This was followed closely by me with 4 TD
receptions and a sack, and Fred Coxey with 2 TD passes and 2 TD
receptions.

Week 9

The weather continues to be outstanding for our games, but about half
way through, an eerie, waist level fog rolled in. The visible breath
of your Blue & Gold Warriors seemed to linger long enough to actually
add to the incoming fog. One out-of-bounds kick-off, was nearly lost
in the darkness outside of our lights and in the fog layer.

With 9 players, I was bouncing back and forth on offense until the
10th guy showed up, to give us an even 5 on 5 game. Gold had the
decided advantage, with Tyler Jones and Ken Riekoff both having big
nights. Blue's MVP would be Tom Sweinberg, who scored all 4 of their
touchdowns. Blue even had the distinction of having more rushing
yards on TD drives than passing yards. 5 Gold INTs helped to lead
them to the 9 to 4 final score.

We should probably post the directions to Waukesha West on one of our
parked cars, so we don't have to give directions to the passing cars
looking for that game while we are trying to play.

NOTES:

Thanks to everyone who didn't leave before 6:00PM, because I was
running really late Friday night.

This coming Friday is the last regular season game (Week 10).

Post season play may continue the week after Thanksgiving (Heck, if
the weather stays nice, we can play until Waukesha Park & Rec. cuts us
off or there is no interest, which ever comes first.). If the TLPs
wish to rally up a team, we may call that the Super Bowl. As always,
to qualify, all you have to due is show up...

Play of the Day:

Tom Sweinberg had 2 really nice rushes that were for attempts for a
1st downs that went all the way for touchdowns. The one that gets the
play of the day is the one where Ken Riekoff yelled, "I got him!" in
the backfield as Tom squirted up the left side. This faked out the
rest of Ken's team and even Tom slowed up at the 25 yard line trying
to figure out how he got tagged. At this point Ken admitted that he
didn't get him and Tom finished the run.

The runner up in this category was the Ken Riekoff INT pitched to
Tyler Jones for the final ten yards returned for a TD. This is
indicated by the ~ in the stats below.

Stat Leader:

Tyler Jones had the stat leader title with 3 TD passes, 3 TD
receptions, 1 Rushing TD, 2 INTs and a sack for the much coveted
statistical quinella. (That is, something in each of 5 categories.)

Week 10

As I drove through the cold light rain to get to the game, I figured
things were not looking good. We waited in the Prairie Park parking
lot, with the faint smell skunk, until 8 players showed up. The
breeze kept the smell away from the field, which was in surprisingly
good condition considering the on and off rainy conditions of the day.
As we played the weather became a non-issue. Those extra sweat shirts
came off in the first quarter. We had a record fan turn out of 10,
for our the last regular season game, which included a fan
participation segment. A teenage guy joined the Gold team, and a girl
joined the Blue team, while their 3 friends watched. Since the
attention span of kids, these days, is so short, they quit after 2
plays on a Gold touchdown. Guess they didn't want to play on special
teams for the kick off.

It was an very evenly matched game with big leads created by either
team. One stat should really pop out at you right away, a total of 10
sacks were recorded in the game. I'm pretty sure that that is a
record for a single game. It came down to the final touchdown. We
were playing for the final score to win, hoping the curse was gone.
Blue made a long drive down to the 10 yard line, only to have it
intercepted on the 2 yard line. Gold responded to the challenge with
one play, a Bill Ray to Tyler Jones 98 yard touchdown pass. Final
score Gold 6 - Blue 5.

NOTES:

Thanks to everyone for a great season, give yourselves a hand!

Post season play may continue the week after Thanksgiving (Heck, if
the weather stays nice, we can play until Waukesha Park & Rec. cuts us
off or there is no interest, which ever comes first.). I'll try after
Thanks giving to see how much interest there is in a Super Bowl. If
the TLPs wish to rally up a team, we could do that then. As always,
to qualify for post season play, all you have to due is show up...

Play of the Day:

Dave Dubberstein's interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown.
Bill Ray was the only guy who had a shot at him, but Gary Sima clear
the way with a decleating block on Bill.

Or...

The Bill Ray to Tyler Jones 98 yard touchdown pass. From his own
endzone throws a 15 yard pattern to Tyler and it was all Tyler after
that.

Stat Leader:

Tyler Jones had the stat leader title with 1 TD pass, 2 TD receptions,
2 Rushing TD, 2 INTs and 2 sacks once again for the much coveted
statistical quinella. (nearly 2 in each of 5 categories.)

SUPER BOWL

As I predicted, the weather provided us with a window to hold the
Super Bowl, with the rain letting up less than hour prior to the
contest. The field was muddy but there was no standing water. This
game turned into the TLP about a day prior kick off, when enough TLPs
joined to make an all TLP team. With 6 on 5 The GEFNFL team was in a
constant rotation cycle with one guy on the bench all the time.

There were too many good plays to mention, but I'll try recap a few.
There was my one hand tip drill, of a slant pass that I eventually
caught a few yards further down field from the defender setting up a
much needed first down. Tyler Jones with one of his always elusive
rushing TDs. The TLP double forward pass/flea flicker thing, that
they executed so well, that we let them have it, as long as they
didn't do it again. (Note: double passes are allowed if one is not
forward.) Greg Lillegard's catch of a deep post pattern that Dave
Dubberstein threw over the top for a 60 yard TD. A Chris Walters TD
catch that was so good I originally marked down for Joe Wagovich, who
already had one. Chris Mullins repeated, safety valve release
patterns, from the blocker position that marched the TLPs down the
field for another score. Dave Dubberstein, turning on the
afterburners, to catch a Bill Ray pass in the end zone. Denny Lau's
40 yard go-pause-go pattern for the last TD of the game.

The game began as a defensive struggle that broke lose with Tyler
Jone's 90 interception for a TD. (which was the Play of the Day) .
From that point on it became an offensive game, with the GEFNFL guys
and the TLPs trading TDs alternately for most of the rest of the game.
The TLPs led by at least one TD most of the game. When it came down
to the final series, the TLPs were up by 1 and getting another shot on
offense. They scored on Denny Lau's catch with a final score of 8 to
6, giving the TLPs there first victory in this series.

As is tradition in this game, the GEFNFL guys covered the cost of the
lights. (Apparently some of the TLPs didn't realized that they paid
for the last 2 losses, and should thank whoever covered it for them.)
The current standings of this rivalry now stands at GEFNFL-2 and
TLPs-1. They even joined at the bar afterward, to dispel the rumor
that TLPs don't drink beer.

A great time was had by all and everyone made the stats. Thanks to
everyone who made the season possible. And by popular demand, we may
try to hold a Pro Bowl this week. Is that a rematch in the works?

Play of the Day:

Tyler Jones picked off an outside pass at the TLP 10 yard line, and
with his usual agility, he eluded several defenders, breaking free at
mid field where he turned on leaving everyone else in the dust (er, I
mean mud).

Stat Leader:

Tyler Jones, of course, (and after I said those nice things about him)
with 1 TD Pass, 3 TD Recptions, and 2 INTs including the one for a TD.

Injury Status:

Bill Ray is out for the season with a broken finger. (and you guys
thought I was kidding when I called for last series because of a
broken finger). I'm including Bill's message (I believe he means Joe
Wagovich below):
The X-Ray's show that I broke the top part of my ring finger in
half. One part is displaced laterally and is pushing up on the bottom
of my nail. It looks fairly jagged. I need to see a hand surgeon this
week -- there might be some ligament damage. Anyway, looks like I'm on
the IR for the rest of the season.

BTW, I remember when I injured the hand, it was when that tall
dark haired TLP (not Chris Walters) caught a long pass on my side and
was running in for a touchdown. I remember that when I caught up to
him, I swung my hand down hard to tag him and got my finger caught in
the mesh of his jersey, and the finger got torqued. It felt as if I
pealed the fingernail off but the pain wasn't too bad...heck I
finished that defensive series and 2 more offensive series before the
end of the game.

Wayne, don't forget to let everyone know that we're going to the
Broke Spoke for the Packers-Viking Monday night game on the 20th!!

PRO BOWL

It was in the low 20s, with about an inch of snow on the ground.
Prairie Park Field was all chewed up in the middle of the playing
area, like a garden tiller had gone through. I could not see any
cleat marks from our previous muddy contest. But that was not the
worst of it. It was littered with fist sized chunks of ground, frozen
down to ground, (not sod, sod has grass in it) making for a very
treacherous playing field. Those that fell on it, can attest to that.
(Jamie?, Dan? You guys OK?) Running on it, was really hard on the
ankles.

This game turned into a GEFNFL Vs. TLP game about 10 minutes prior
kick off. With 5 on 5 and Gold scoring on the first play, you'd have
thought this would turn into a high scoring affair. As it turned out,
it was quite a while before Blue answered with a TD, and later gained
the lead on a drive that utilized the hurry up offense. After trading
a few TDs, Blue scored on their final drive. (The one that ended my
season.) Gold's final drive, to attempt to tie the game, failed. So
the GEFNFL guys regained a measure of self-respect by sneaking out a 4
to 3 victory.

Play of the Day:

Tyler's shot gun arm, rocketing a pass into the end zone, through Dave
Dubberstein's smoking hands into the neck of Joe Wagovich for a TD.
The only thing that saved Dave's fingers were the thick leather gloves
he was wearing. Nice throw Brett, I mean Tyler.

Dave Dubberstein's all over the field rush for 50 yards or so for a
first down. He even out maneuvered Tyler. (No small task) It took
a big chunk out of the yards that Blue needed on that drive. I don't
think the drive scored but it did change the field position.

Stat Leader:

Tom Sweinberg tied with Tyler Jones for Stat Leader, Tom had 1 TD
Recptions, 1 TD Rushing and 1 INTs while Tyler had 1 TD Pass, 2 TD
Recptions.

Injury Status:

Prairie Park (a.k.a Schott Hamstring Park) finally claimed Schott's
hamstring, with a season ending injury. Fortunatly it was the end of
the season and I have plenty of time to rehab. It occurred during
Blue's last drive as I tried, unsuccessfully, to stretch a 5 yard pass
reception into 10 yard TD. I heard it pop, although I am told that
the only reason I heard it, was through bone conduction. The funny
part, was the next 2 plays, as I tried to block Drew while hopping
around on one leg.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR AN ENJOYABLE SEASON! You guys really helped
out with everything, including covering the lights. Makes my job
easier when people show when they say they will. It's the most fun I
had all year.

DON'T FORGET: BILL RAY, TOM SWEINBERG, AND OTHERS WILL BE AT THE BROKE
