GEFNFL - 2000 Game Summaries

WEEK 1 (Canceled)

WEEK 2

A great clear cool night to play football that was again punctuated by a
fly-by of the Opertion Football helicopter at Prairie Field. (They
didn't even pause this time.) Didn't need the lights until halftime.
The field was in excellent shape, grass is a little long, so turf shoes
are a must.

Gold got a off to a good lead early, but Blue fought it back to a close
8 to 6 game with Gold hanging on to it's lead.

Two nominations for Play-of-the-Day:
1) Joe Hanak's interception, quickly returned for a touchdown by
avoiding the QB.
2) Dave Dubberstein's catch at about mid field that turned into a
touchdown, due to his use of all kinds of downfield blocking by myself.
He crossed the field from right to left and to the right again doing
about a 100 yards to gain 50.

David Dubberstein won the stat leader title with 3 TD passes, 4 TD
receptions, 2 INTs and a sack

WEEK 5

On an cool evening that they promised us snow, it was a surprisingly
great night
to play football. Once we started to play, we generated our own heat.
Fan
attendance: 3 (of the Coxey variety). We had 3 new people this week,
adapting to our style of game, one of which was learning football from
scratch. Hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

Blue started off by scoring on the opening drive. but took it on the
chin for
the rest of the game. Gold scored the next 5 TDs to win 5 to 1.

Play of the Day: Tom Sweinberg's 45 yard throw to Jamie Hamilton took
the honors
because it was all Blue could to prevent Jamie from just walking in.

Jamie Hamilton won the stat leader title with 1 TD pass, 1 TD
receptions, 1
Rushing TD and a sack

WEEK 6

An outstanding evening to play football. Fan attendance topped out at
10, 2 of which needed to use a cell phone and one who began to do the
play-by-play announcements. The Operation Football helicopter again got
lost looking for the high school game the supposed to covering and paid
us a visit. We had 2 new people this week, Leonard Stewart and I can't
remember Rich Vanden Boogard's friend's name. (Rich get me a name,
forward this to him, and have him e-mail me.)

This was battle went back and forth with a lot of good defensive stands,
making it a low scoring affair. Rich's friend left early (sighting
being married as the reason why, all us married guys just shrugged) so
Gold played a man short on both sides of the ball. It was tied 3-3 when
the call went out for last TD wins. Gold won with the play of the day.

Play of the Day: Despite the center pushing the rushing Prashanth
Holenarsipur back 5 yards, Tyler Jones ended up in a mad scramble. He
avoided both Prashanth and Leonard to throw a 20 yard pass to Chris
Mullins in the end zone for the final TD. It was at that point we
figured out how to get Chris to catch, apparently we shouldn't throw it
at his hands. This was a much tougher catch than the ones he dropped
today.

Jason Carter won the stat leader title with 2 TD receptions, 2 INTs and
a sack, Tyler Jones a close second had more TDs with 3 TD passes and a
INT.

WEEK 7

I don't how many more great football nights we will get but I will take
as many as we can get. One negative side effect of the great weather,
is the return of the uninvited guest, the mosquito has returned to the
playing field. We had 10 players and fan turn out of about 5.

Blue got off to a terrible start (in Packer 2000 fashion) by muffing the
snap on 4th down in each of the first 2 series to which Gold responded
with 2 one play TD drives. Never really being able to over come the
deficit. Gold pounded on to a 8-4 victory.

Play of the Day: 3 nominations

The 45 yard 4th down pass from Chris Mullins to Leonard Stewart at the 5
yard line who pitched it to Sean Lucas for the TD.

The 40 yard Dave Dubberstein Hail Mary pass down the middle knocked down
by Tom Sweinberg, into the waiting arms of Chris Mullins at the 3 yard
line.

Tom Sweinberg's interception at his own 40 which he returned the
distance for a TD.

There were four Stat Leaders:
Chris Mullens with 2 Passing TDs, 2 Receiving TDs and a sack
Tom Sweinberg with 1 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TDs, 1 Rushing TDs and 2
INTs(one INT for a TD)
Todd Clegg with 1 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TDs, 2 INTs and a sack.
Tyler Jones with 3 Passing TDs and 2 Receiving TDs.

WEEK 8

As dismal as the weather looked as I drove to the field, the mist died
off and stayed away as we played. The field had good traction in the
middle but was a little slippery in the grassy areas. We had 12 players
(2 rookies) and fan turn out of about 2.

Blue got off to another terrible start by throwing an INT for a TD on
the first play. Blue answered with only one TD. It was a fairly low
scoring game with lots of drives ending with interceptions. Gold
pounded on to a 4-1 victory.

Play of the Day:

An INT for a TD by Fred Coxey on the first play of the game.

Stat Leaders:

Rookie Todd Miller with an unprecedented 5 INTs in one game!

Statman apologizes for any stat errors that may or may not exist below.
Mrs. Staman who has not washed jerseys for 2 weeks now, got on the stick
and washed jerseys and the stat sheet prior to their entry into the
record. This is what I salvaged. It will have to stand until I get any
corrections. Dave? Jason? Rich?

WEEK 9

It was one of our cooler nights indicated by the hard frost on the cars
as we left Micky's. We had 5 on 5 with a fan turn out of 5.

The sides ended up being fairly balanced, which is my goal when I make
teams. Blue got ahead first but Gold kept it close all game. The most
contested play of the year was a 4th down, Jason Carter 7 yard run to
the left reaching out for the goal. It was 50-50 on whether or not Tom
Sweinberg made the tag or the ball made the end zone. I usually give
this to the offense, but some of dissenting opinions came from Jason's
team and with Tom making a good case for his position. This forced a
rare "Do over" play, which was a Jason Carter to Tyler Jones pass that
was knocked down rather unexpectedly. Gold eventually caught up,
getting the score to a 5-5 tie. The usual call for last touchdown, to
break the tie, failed when several players announced that they had to
leave. This ended the game with the 5-5 tie, so everyone wins.

Play of the Day was tough to chose but Jamie Hamilton's 25 yard throw to
the tip of Fred Coxey's outstretched reach in the end zone. Fred really
laid out for that one with the defender about half step behind. He
ended up in the prone position.

Stat Leader was Jamie Hamilton with 2 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving, and 1
Sack.

WEEK 10

It was the coolest night so far this year. I was really glad to see the
frost on our sideline gear near the end of the game, for reasons I'll
explain later. We had enough players to play 6 on 6, with a fan count
of only 3.

This was another one of those see-saw battles with the sides
surprisingly even. Gold won on a Tyler Jones scramble from the 10 yard
line with the final score of 4 to 3.

Hit of the Day: (A feature not presented in quit some time) There were
actually 2. The first was on a Gold completion for a first down as I was
closing in for a tag. A nice Jason Carter block completely took me out
of the play, driving my
own elbow into my ribs knocking the air out of me. The second hit
occurred in the Play of the day listed below.

Play of the Day: Sean Lucas's interception of a Gold pass at the 1 yard
line. There was plenty of action on this play. Sean starts to return it
to the opposite end zone as Jason Carter closes in to tag him before he
gets anywhere. However as he starts to reach for the tag, he realizes he
is about to receive the second hit of the day. He pulls his arms in to
protect himself as we collide, bouncing his head off of my chest with a
thud. This springs Sean free to sprint toward the other goal with Greg
"never say die" Lillegard in pursuit. With about 30 yards to the goal,
Sean starts drifting away from the side lines allowing Greg to close in
on him. Sean said his feet started getting out of sync. Greg makes an
outstanding tag at the 1 yard line, saving the touchdown. Sean gets
credit for a 98 yard return on that INT.

Injury status: Near the end of the game I didn't get low enough for one
of Tom Sweinberg's line drive bullets, and took a blow on the my right
ring finger. It was instantly dislocated at the first knuckle. I
waited out the remaining
minutes of the game using the frost on our gear as ice packs. I tried
twice (and Bill Ray once) to relocate it, but the doc at Waukesha
Memorial made it look easy. Hat's off to them for getting me out of
there in time to hook up with the guys at Sporty's. Wish I had that
X-ray, the bones were miss-aligned by nearly 1/2 inch. To those of you
who winced when you saw it - I'm OK, it just looks like a sprain now.

Stat Leader was Tyler Jones with 2 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TD, and 1
Rushing TD.

WEEK 11

It was cold but with no wind it turned out to be pretty nice night for
football. We only had enough players to play 4 on 4, with a fan count
of only 2 (Cliff & son made an appearance).

This was a high scoring affair since neither man to man or zone defense
seemed to really have any kind of advantage. The footing in the hard
packed middle of the field was somewhat treacherous. Several plays were
made by paying attention to the sound of cleats sliding on the clay and
seeing if your guy was the one still standing. Blue won with the final
score of 9 to 7.

Todd and I had an interesting set of exchanges. I was on offense
playing center, he was on defense and rushing. My rookie QB called for
a run up the middle, which if you have ever played 1 hand touch is near
impossible. So I figured I had better push Todd out of the middle, at a
45 degree angle. I caught Todd by surprise and he couldn't get his feet
under himself. He ended up about 5 yards downfield as my QB threw an
incomplete pass instead. Todd vowed to be ready for me next time, and I
had no doubt that he would be. So what does the QB call? Another run
up the middle, with me blocking! I told him no, and that I would run a
swing pass, counting on Todd's determination. Needless to say Todd
went after me as I ran sideways down the line-of-scrimmage leaving a
hole for the QB draw. It didn't go for big yards but it did work. It
was time to stop playing center against Todd while I was ahead.

Play of the Day: Tyler Jones caught about a 40 yard pass and had get 15
yards and past 2 defenders make the endzone. With Fred Coxey and Dave
Dubberstein out in front making the blocks, and Tyler's moves, Tyler
made the endzone despite being somewhat boxed in.

Injury status: My finger survived the game quite well, considering that
it had been only a week since it's dis-location.

Stat Leader was Todd Clegg with 2 Passing TDs, 4 Receiving TD, and 1
INT and 1 Sack.
