GEFNFL - 2001 Game Summaries
WEEK 1
Sorry this is late, but I took Monday as vacation so I could work on
this:
http://www.netwurx.net/~schott/perch_lake/ (Anyone interested in the
camper? I give GE discounts!)
It was nice to see a few planes in the sky, although they seemed to be
in no particular hurry. Your Blue and Gold Warriors shook the rust
off and fought it out to a 4-4 tie. It ended as it got dark with a
formidable mosquito attack.
Stat leaders are Tyler Jones and Bill Ray Jr each with one TD Pass a
and 2 TD Receptions.
At first I couldn't recall any outstanding plays for Play-of-the-Day.
But Dave helped me remember a nice 50 yard TD catch by Tyler Jones
over the top of a defender, who chose to go for the ball instead of
Tyler. Tyler was then free to go the distance. I remember this one
now, because I was covering the short zone on the opposite side and
ended up being only one close enough to make Tyler have run (a little)
rather than walk into the end zone.

WEEK 2
We had a big turn out for the Week 2 game with as many as 8 eight a
side at a time, with Prashanth playing the rotating man on offense at
first. Blue scored first but was dealt a devastating blow when Tom
Sabourin pulled a hamstring. They were never able to get over the
loss of their new rookie and watched helplessly as Gold proceeded to
shove 4 TDs down their throats. As I predicted before the game, it
was a big day for interceptions with a total of 12 in the game. Gold
had 4 more INTs than Blue which exactly matches their score. Fan
count was up to 5 (neighborhood kids) including 3 little ones that
thought it would be fun to run around the lit up baseball diamond.
The only plays that stood out for Play-of-the-Day were a few memorable
plays that failed. So instead I nominated one of Fred Coxey's 2 end
zone corner fade patterns for play of the day. I believe Chris
Mullins threw one of them and rookie Ethan Fricklas threw the other.
(Correct me if I am wrong)
Stat Leader was a rookie Ethan Fricklas with 2 TD Passes and 2 INTs
Injury report Tom Sabourin went out about half way through with a
pulled hamstring. (Someone had to christen the new park.)
Sponsors found? Kim Hickey, the owner or manger of Rano's (the bar we
stopped at) on 512 Lincoln Ave, Waukesha, kicked in $20 for this game
and $20 for the next game so the lights will be cheaper next game.
Apparently, she noticed our cleats, so she asked where we played.
After finding out how much the field cost us, she came back with forty
bucks and vowed to go after her alderman to get us a better deal.
Lost & Found - I have a Gray Notre Dame sweatshirt with the word Grace
on it. I'll have it a the next game if you want it back.

WEEK 3
Another big turn out for the Week 3 game playing 7 on 6 with Gold
graciously rotating a man out to keep the sides even. The fresh legs
must have helped Gold, because they crushed Blue with a score of 6 to
2. The rookies this year seem to be doing exceptionally well.
Fan count was up to 8, neighborhood kids playing a little game of
their own and a couple of Coxey's Army also showed up. Also there
were 2 "Drive by Shoutings" (down from 4 in Week 2).
Play-of-the-Day: Was it Sastry's dominating sack on the muffed snap?
No. Was it Tom Sweinberg's play at the Rano's West Juke Box (with
wasted blonde biker chick.) Karaoke Girl better watch out. Nope. It
was the play that ended the game. It started with Gold throwing the
last interception to Tom Sweinberg at Gold's own 20, Tom scrambles it
back to about the 40 and pitches it back to Tyler who gets wide left
around the defenders and goes the remaining 60 yards on his own. I
wasn't even sure how to score this, but after several days of
reflection, Tom gets the INT and Tyler gets a Rushing TD.
Stat Leader was a another rookie Ken Vosiak with 2 TD Passes, 1 TD
Reception and 2 INTs
Injury Report: Upayan went down with a ankle injury late in the game
on a play that can only be described as an accidental leg tangling
with rookie Mahesh. Nothing broken and he is listed as a MAYBE for
this week, realistically it may be a week or two before he is on the
field again.
Kim Hickey, the owner and manger of Rano's East on 512 Lincoln Ave,
Waukesha, bought 4 small pizzas and kicked in $20 for the next game.
Bill Jr. is still working the XFL Jersey angle with Dunhams at about
$14.95 a piece.
Lost & Found - I still have Chris Mullens Gray Notre Dame sweatshirt.

WEEK 4
I would call it an average turnout with 5 on 5. It was the coolest
night so far this year dropping into the low 50s. Gold got up on Blue
first with a 2 to 0 score, but after that Blue's responded with 5 TDs
to Gold's 1 for a final score of Blue 5 to Gold 3.
Fan count was around 4, but a TV Helicopter did hover near the field
for about 10 minutes. I suspect that they were looking for the
Catholic Memorial game. Also there were 2 "Drive by Shoutings" . The
mosquitos were a no-show.
I have been asked to define "rookie" in the context of GEFNFL. A
player is considered a rookie for only their very first game, things
are more compressed in this league so you are a veteran after one
game.
Play-of-the-Day: There were 2 plays to note. Jason Carter's solo
rushing TD from about the 40 yard line. And the game ending INT
returned about 100 yards for a TD by Dave Dubberstein. I can't recall
if it was in the end zone, but I'm sure someone will remind me.
Stat Leader was Dave Dubberstein with 1 TD Passes, 1 INT for TD for a
TD and 2 Sacks (Can you say Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, "I knew you
couldn't.")
Injury Report: Nothing new, finally.
Kim Hickey, the owner and manger of Rano's East on 512 Lincoln Ave,
Waukesha, left instructions to the hired help and again bought 4 small
pizzas, but was not there to kick in $20 for the next game.

WEEK 5
Big turnout with 7 on 8 as Blue rotated the extra man to keep the
sides even. Even Cliff Pautz showed to play. For those of you how
don't know him, he is one of the originals to start this league back
about 1977. It became apparent that we had several players on the
field, that were not yet born, when the league started! GEFNLF
League history is at:
http://www.netwurx.net/~schott/gefnfl/history.htm
As the temperatures dropped, the grass got full of dew, adding a slip
factor to the grassy areas and making difficult to keep the ball dry.
Gold got up on Blue quickly with a 2 to 0 score, making me think that
I had poorly balanced the teams. Blue stuck with zone defense as
Gold moved to a modified man to man defense. But after that Blue's
responded with 6 TDs to Gold's 1 for a final score of Blue 6 to Gold
3.
Fan count was around 14, including 4 of Coxey's Army (Look it up in
the Encyclopedia) and 2 - 12 year old National Guardsmen, no
helicopters or "Drive by Shoutings".
Play-of-the-Day: Goes to a guy I'm calling Andy "the Kid" (because no
one ever told me his last name, and I know he is about 16 years old.)
The play was a 50 Yard Interception for a TD in the last quarter.
He was using his soccer playing skills to evade the opponents zig
zagging all over the field. The kid has a motor.
Stat Leader was Dave Dubberstein with 2 TD Passes, 2 TD Reception for
a TD and 1 Sack.
Injury Report: All minor items, Rookies Andy (the Kid) was limping
and Frank Dong jammed his ring finger. I tweaked the wrist I've been
nursing, but it oddly seems better now, than all of last week.
Kim Hickey, the owner and manger of Rano's East on 512 Lincoln Ave,
Waukesha, left instructions to the hired help and again bought 2 small
pizzas and the bartender threw in another. The difference this time
was she left instruction to give us $20 for this week's game.
Lost & Found - I still have Chris Mullens Gray Notre Dame sweatshirt,
I think.

WEEK 6
Hugh turnout with 10 on 10 as both teams rotated the 2 extra men to
limit the number of players to 8 per team. It was a record turnout
for a regular GEFNFL game. (TLP Challenge games were bigger but we
were combining 2 pickup leagues then.) There were 5 players not born
yet when this league started in 1977. I don't know how long we can
keep lucking out with the weather but it was an outstanding fall
evening for football. Fan count was around 16, Coxey's Army has
swollen to 7 , there was one "Drive by Shouting" and one Honkey. A
cop car did several laps around the game this week we suspect he was
making sure we weren't drinking. (We did that later)
During the first 40 minutes or so Gold got up on Blue first with a 3
to 0 score, starting it off with the Play-of-the-Day. The
Play-of-the-Day goes to Andy "the Kid" (Dan Rhode's Nephew.) It was
a 101 Yard Interception for a TD, he made the catch and was gone.
Gold score twice more and then never scored again. And that was when:
It became the game that never ends.
It goes on and on my friends,
some people started playing not knowing what it was
and they will keep on playing it forever just because...
With the extra players there was a lot of extra pass rushing as well
as extra blocking going on. Each drive either turned over on downs
or ended in an interception for the next hour and 20 minutes:
Oh! It's the game that never ends.
It goes on and on my friends,
some people started playing not knowing what it was
and they will keep on playing it forever just because...
Around 8:00 PM (which is how long we had the lights for) we called for
"Next Touchdown" which means next score ends the game. (We like ending
on a score.)
Oh! It's the game that never ends.
It goes on and on my friends,
some people started playing not knowing what it was
and they will keep on playing it forever just because...
For the next hour Blue and Gold slugged it out as we started losing
players, Tom Sabourin popped a hamstring (he said heard it this time),
Jim Laugh left
Oh! It's the game that never ends.
It goes on and on my friends,
some people started playing not knowing what it was

So, we went about 2 and a half hours without a score. Finally around
9:00 PM, on a Todd Clegg pass to Bill Jr. the last score was made.
Oh! It's the game that never ends.
It goes on and on my friends,
some people started playing not knowing what it was
and they will keep on playing it forever just because...
Stat Leader was Jim Laugh with 1 TD Passes, 1 TD Reception, 1 INT and
1 Sack. (Short only a rushing TD for the quinella)
Injury Report: Tom Sabourin, hamstring (he seams better than last
time.) Dave Dubberstein is still wearing a couple of nasty bruises
I don't know if we went past their curfew, but I was the only member
of the Gold team to make it to Rano's East with about six of Blue
team. Kim Hickey, the owner and manger, again left instructions to
the hired help and bought 2 small pizzas and $20 for this week's game
that never ends...

WEEK 7
The first snowflakes of the season made an appearance but didn't
amount to anything. We had a more typical turnout with 6 on 5 as
Blue rotated the extra men out on defense and played a 4 second no
running offense. That took a little bit to get working properly, Blue
was using too much time at first. Thanks to Gold for the patience, it
was too cold to sit out much. (At least until the injuries started to
pile up.)
Fan count was way down around 4, only one "Drive by Shouting". Last
week, a cop car did several laps around the game, we suspect he was
making sure we weren't drinking. (We did that later.) But he left us
alone this week.
Blue got it going first, but then struggled though most of the rest of
the game until the last TD. Gold was able to score on most of their
drives, while Blue was running out of downs and dropping TD plays in
the end zone (With the sounds of works "I S_ck!" ringing in the air).
The interception battle was remarkably low at 2 and 2, so , sputtering
drives account for most of the non-scoring drives. Frank Dong made
his first stat score a big sack, and has really come along a Blue's
middle line backer. Gold scored a rare "Team Sack" (one fifth of a
sack for each player on the field), because they had no rusher when
Blue muffed a snap. (OK, that's the way Statman decided to score it,
that's my story and I'm sticking with it.) The final TD deserves
mention because David Southgate had been dragging himself back to the
huddle each play. Needing to get a first down I ran Dave across the
field at the first down line, he caught the ball a few steps from
going out-of-bounds and turned on a dime, avoided a tag or two, and
motored it up field for the remaining 50 yards for the TD making it
about a 60 yard TD reception.
Play-of-the-Day: Goes to Mahesh Narayanswamy & Tyler Jones for about
a 60+ yard pass play which was about the nicest long pass I've seen in
a while. Tyler ran a long route on the outside and crossed to the
middle of the field to grab Mahesh's 40+ yard toss. Deeper than any
of the defenders thought he could throw. Tyler caught it in stride
and easily made the last 20+ yards to end zone. Great effort by both
of them. A close second was David Southgate's catch detailed above.
Stat Leader was Mahesh Narayanswamy with 1 TD Passes and 3 TD
Reception. Todd ("I s_ck!") Clegg was a close second with 1 TD Rec 2
INTs and a Sack. (Sacks don't count as much as TDs)
Injury Report: Tom Sweinberg landed on the back of his head, after
falling over me, early in the game. David Southgate was hobbling
around between plays but seemed to get pumped for each play. I got
the wind out me (like never before, worse than my collision with Curt
Lesmeister years ago) when I landed on my elbow in the end zone trying
to get low enough for the ball. Couldn't draw a breath for about
10-15 seconds, which seemed like a couple of minutes to me. I have
bruised ribs, now. Dave Dubberstein - Toe. Frank Dong - ring finger.
Can't remember Todd Clegg's injury and I am probably missing more. At
one point, in Blue's huddle, the quarterback looked around and asked
"OK, who is not gimpy?"
We haven't seen Kim Hickey in a while, but Rano's East made good again
with 2 small pizzas and $20 for this week's lights. The Jersey fund
is growing every week.
Lost & Found - Chris Mullens (His Gray Notre Dame sweatshirt took a
vacation to Eagle River last weekend to hunt coyotes.)

WEEK 8
We had outstanding fall night for the game, and with turnout of 16 for
8 on 8, the field was quite busy. The fan count was at 8, including 2
of Coxey's Army (one was armed: he was wielding a new Hockey stick).
Only one "Drive by Shouting" and 3 Honkys (including Sastry, who
honked as he drove up, late, trying to get mentioned in the game
review). He got a sack this week so even that was unnecessary. Come
to think of it, Satry, maybe you should rush more - the most sacks for
a single game this year so far is 2. If you got three, it could
become a 2001 record!
Blue and Gold traded touchdowns to start the contest out. At that
point the Buchner Park mystique kicked in, you know, the one that
produced some of those weird events in the years gone by. This time it
was an absolutely beautiful fox, wearing nothing but her flowing red
hair, streaked across the field at the far 20 yard line, showing us
only her tail. Blue was never the same after that. Gold began piling
up the TDs one after another for the next five. Blue finally scored a
conciliatory TD on a 45 lame duck pass from Schott to Ken Vosniak in
the end zone. It was such a bad throw, I thought it was going to go
end over end, but it got there. The game ended with a score of 7 to 2
on the Play-of-the-Day below.
Play-of-the-Day: There were so many I decided to settle on the one
the rookie Patrick Tobiasz threw at the end of the game. From about
his own 40 yard line he threw a 60 yard strike to the end zone with an
amazing catch by Andy "The Kid"
Stat Leader was Andy "The Kid" Saugstad with 1 TD Pass and 2 TD
Receptions and 2 INTs.
Injury Report: I have no new injuries to report on, other than an
update on Frank Dong's ring finger. He has a detached flexor tendon,
he is waiting to see if it reattaches itself under a pressure splint.
Dave tells me it was one of my practice throws a few weeks ago that
did it. Sorry. As for myself, my ribs hurt only when I sneeze.
Kim Hickey showed up late at Rano's East, she just got back from the
Rod Stewart Show. She made good again with 2 small pizzas and $20
for this week's lights. We have to do a Rano's Appreciation this
coming Friday. They have been great to us. Try to make arrangements
to stop there Friday if you can.
Lost & Found - Chris Mullens (His Gray Notre Dame sweatshirt was
nearly in a accident, as a semi moved into the left lane in which it
currently occupied. Fortunately the sweatshirt's reflexes were quick
enough to move the green Metro on the shoulder on Hwy 43 for a quarter

WEEK 9
We had another outstanding fall night for the last regular season
game, and with turnout of 15 for 8 on 7, with Blue substituting a man
in and out to keep the sides even. The fan count was at low 4,
(Coxey's Army was AWOL). Only 2 "Drive by Shouting" and 3 Honkys and
no foxes.
I've been having difficulty balancing the teams lately. So much so,
that Todd Clegg decided that he lost too many games as Blue, and took
a Gold jersey, and wished he'd be on the winning team. After trading
a few TDs, sure enough, Gold took control of the game. The game was
punctuated by a rushing TD for each team (Tom Sweinberg and John Zur)
and an INT returned for a TD by Rich Vanden Boogard. Andy had a great
game and made Stat Leader again. At one point in the game, the entire
Blue team was tied with Andy at 3 to 3. The game ended with Gold in
the lead, and a more respectable score of 6 to 4. Todd got his
wish. And that's what the GEFNFL is for... Making Todd's wishes come
true...
Play-of-the-Day: Double pass play beautifully executed by Blue from
the 10 yard line for a TD. John Zur rolled right and threw the first
pass back to Ethan Fricklas, while the defense adjusted, he found
Andy "the Kid" Saugstad in the left corner of the end zone. Sorry
John, Ethan gets credit for the TD Throw (just like in the Pros).
Stat Leader was Andy "The Kid" Saugstad with 1 TD Pass and 3 TD
Receptions and 2 INTs.
Injury Report: Nothing new, however Rich seems to be limping on a
tender ankle between plays. Then he goes to play hockey, after
football, so it can't be too bad.
Kim Hickey was a no-show at Rano's East, but she had Kevin make good
again with 2 small pizzas and $20 for this week's lights. I think we
should stop there Saturday if we play at Buchner.
Next is Post Season Play. In this league to qualify for Post Season
Play you need only show up and play. Now that we have lost the
lights, this is the way Post Season Play might look, depending on
interest and weather.

2001 Super Bowl
We had outstanding fall weather on Sunday afternoon for our Super Bowl
at Muskego's High School football field. We decided to upgrade from
the practice field when Tom Sweinberg said that he paid taxes here and
wanted to use it for his 3 hours right now. Despite being locked out,
and having to jump the fence, it was kicked off in true Super Bowl
tradition, with a military flyby of the Milwaukee's very own 128th
Air Refueling Wing. Muskego seems much more reserved than Waukesha
since we had no "Drive by Shoutings" and no Honkys and no foxes.
The fan count was at 10, including the guy with end zone seats in his
raised backyard deck across the road from the field. He got out a
beer and a lawn chair and watched the middle 2 quarters. By the
fourth quarter, he had given up on anyone jumping into the stands.
(Coxey and Coxey's Army was AWOL).
With a 100 yard field to work with, we broke out the 3' tall orange
cones (not seen by anyone, since Week 1, except for Tom's family). We
narrowed the field and set up 2 first down markers. One at either 30
yard line. Gold scored first on a 5 yard square out pass from Ethan
Fricklas to Rich Vanden Boogard. It slowed down considerably after
that with many long drives ending on downs. One Gold-Tom Sweinberg
drive ended on the 1/2 foot line, which was followed by a 65 yard
Blue-Dave Dubberstein drive ending on the opposite 35 yard line. The
long drought between the first and second TD put Blue into the wind
for much of the game. Gold did get eventually get that second TD on a
Dan Rhode to Ken Vosniak pass.
Without needing the lights, we let the game run until we just started
running out of gas. The call for last touchdown was meet with several
laughs and a few references to the game that never ends. With 2 TDs
scored in 3 hours of play, how long would it take to get that last TD?
Tom Sweinberg answered that on almost the next play. Tom intercepts
a pass in the right flat and take it 30+ yards for the game ending TD.
Final score of Gold 3 to Blue 0.
Lessons learned on a 100 yard field that is marked every 5 yards:
1) 100 yards is a long ways.
2) 5 yards is a lot less than I thought. A 5 yard out looks like
what I'd call a 3 yard out on the other field with fewer lines.
3) NFL receivers have no excuses for not hitting the right mark
on such a well marked field.
4) More players and full width might be easier to deal with.
Several good plays went out of bounds on the cone marked side of the
field.
5) We should have set up 3 first downs, perhaps at the 25, 50 and
25 yard lines, because many long drives were killed by that 40 yard
gap in the middle of the field between first downs. A series could
get killed on a missed second down play, simply because it forces
longer plays on third and fourth downs.
Play-of-the-Day: It was suggested the Play-of-the-Day was the first
TD, a 5 yard square out pass from Ethan Fricklas to Rich Vanden
Boogard, because it took only 1 TD to win this thing. It probably
could have been Tom Sweinberg's game ending INT for a TD. However,
the play that invoked the most discussion afterward (and at game time)
was the Hook'n Ladder run by Blue at mid-field. It was designed to go
to Bill Ray Jr. about 15-20 yard down field, quick pitch back to Tyler
Jones crossing behind him. But things don't go as planned and the
clearing man, Dave Dubberstein ended up with rookie Paul Edwards'
throw. Staying with the play, Dave pitches it back to Tyler but there
is too much traffic for Tyler to get far. It looked like a broken
play, but it was called like that, well, almost like that.
Stat Leader was tied between Tom Sweinberg and Ken Vosniak. Tom had 1
INT and 1 INT for a TD. Ken had 1 TD Reception and 1 INT.
Injury Report: None (And there was much rejoicing!)
Next? Depending on interest and weather, we could try to pull of a
Pro Bowl game, but I'd need some indication that you guys still want
to play.
We got to the Broke Spoke about 3:15 PM, just in time to watch Jason
Hansen miss the last field goal for the Lions, forcing the Packers
into a life or death game this coming Sunday. The Broke Spoke is
exactly as billed, a rough approximation of the dive bar (Michelle
would like it) in Kiln, Mississippi of the same name. (which is
apparently 1032 miles south of the Muskego, Broke Spoke). The only
thing missing was the bras of past guest hanging from the ceiling.
Must have decided to clean up. Jeff Farve was not there and
unfortunately they didn't have any food, other than chips, so our stay
was relatively brief. Hmmm... Aren't rookie supposed to buy beer?
Anyway, I went to work afterwards, God, I love my job.
The adventures of Chris Mullens' Gray Notre Dame sweatshirt: It had
front row seats at the 50 yard line of the GEFNFL Super Bowl! A
coveted ticket to be sure...
Big thanks to everyone this season for your quick responses to my
requests for players, the fan & player comments, and yes, even the
stat corrections. The GEFNFL is alive and well and looking forward to
many more full seasons. Thanks to Rano's, we have funds for upgraded
jersey's next year, and maybe even a new ball. I know I've said it
before, and it sounds like a line, but some years this is the most fun
I have all year. Maybe it's a sad commentary on my life, or glowing
praise for all the fans & players in the GEFNFL. I'll let you decide.
