GEFNFL - 2003 Game Summaries

WEEK 1
Rained out.

WEEK 2

We had a great clear, dry, & cool night to finally kick off the season
for the newly uniformed Red & Blue Warriors. We had 6 on 6 for most of
the game, including 3 of our new friends from Norlight. It was kind of
a see-saw battle that bogged down mid-game, when Red did a couple of
goal line stands but couldn't get out of bad field position. I opened
up a little at the end with Blue scoring the final TD. The final score
was Blue 4 and Red 4.

Statleader: Dave Dubberstein with 1 TD Pass 2 TD Receptions, 2 INTs and
a sack. A career day for Dave.

Play-of-the-Day: It was either the astounding 15 yard punt on the end of
first Blue's drive or Blue's 3 bounce fumble of a Red's Kick off. I
guess I can afford to be a little sarcastic at the beginning of the
season. I guess if you want a good play Chris Freer's QB sneak from 10
yards out for a TD was probably as good as Tyler's Jones jumping end
zone grab of a terrible pass thrown by me.

Injuries: A minor (I hope) thumb jamb on Dan Rhode.

Notes: The new jerseys looked great and some funds have been collected
to cover the $120 short fall. I'm not asking for anything specific.
Some guys are kicking $5-10 for the season, others are putting $0.50
when they use one. Once they are paid for, I'll stop collecting. Mrs.
Statman will still be washing them between games.

WEEK 3 - Rainout

WEEK 4

On another cool night on a slightly squishy field the Red & Blue
Warriors pounded out another game on the grid iron. Blue jumped out to a
2-0 lead as the 2 neighbor kids started cheering for the underdog Red
team. After a few more bad plays by Red, the fans turned on them and
began heckling them. I had to move my duffle bag away from them,
because all the cash for 2 weeks of games was sitting right there as the
crowd got ugly. At this point Red got their motor started, scoring 6
more touchdowns with Blue answering with only one more. Final score was
6 to 3 with everyone picking up a stat in one category or another.

Stat leader: Dave Dubberstein with 2 TD Pass 2 TD Receptions, 1 INT and
a sack. Another career day for Dave.

Play-of-the-Day: With only Tom and I stopping for a beer (apparently
only the "Old Timers" remember how to drink beer), there wasn't much
discussion about plays. But I'm going to give the offensive play to the
Upayan Sen Gupta's pass to Tyler Jones on a 5 yard square-in, from about
the 30 yard line, which Tyler made a great scramble for the end zone for
the remaining 25 yards for the TD. My failure on that play, was a poor
tag attempt, which I didn't let happen the rest of the night. Which
sort of leads into a defensive play, voted for by the number of high
fives after the play. It was a 4th down bootleg by Tom Sweinberg from
about the 3 yard line, denied by a Wayne Schott run down & tag(tackle) a
the 1 yard line. That's a foot race I'm not likely to win very often.

Injuries: None.

Notes: The new jerseys looked so great Upayan went home wearing one.
Still collecting funds for jerseys. I'm not asking for anything
specific. Put in what ever you think is fair. Once they are paid for,
I'll stop collecting. Mrs. Statman will still be washing them between
games.

WEEK 5

Probably our warmest night of the season so far, so the game ran a
little on the long side again. We had two rookies, Bryan Edwards & C.J.
Tippery both of which played on the Blue Team. (Aren't rookies supposed
by beer?) The fan count tipped the scales at 5 with the 2 neighbor kids
(from last week) brining their own ball and Bryan Edwards bringing his
family for his (and Blue Team's) own personal cheering section. His 2
little girls could really have use some blue pom-poms. With 7-on-7 the
scoring drives were long and tedious in this evenly matched see-saw
battle. It was hard to have quick huddles when there is that much
traffic to direct. We battled back and forth until the final score was
5 to 4, with Blue on top. The final TD was scored by David Southgate,
which is detailed in the Play-of-the-Day.

Stat leader: David Southgate with 1 TD Pass 1 TD Receptions, 1 Rushing
TD, 1 INT and 3 sacks for the quinella (one stat in each of the five
major categories in one game). Three sacks ties a single game sack
record held by Ken Riekkoff in 1999.

Play-of-the-Day: There were some nice long catches by several people,
including Andy (The Kid), and Tom Sweinberg. But I'm giving the play to
David Southgate's power sweep right from the 7 yard line, with 3
blocking schemes that included a pulling guard, for the winning TD.

Injuries: Rich Vanden Boogard took an elbow to the eye and Dan Rhode
bounced his head off my thigh (no, it was not my knee, but it might have
felt that way). But I think everyone was OK.

Notes: Upayn's jersey made it home. Still collecting funds for
jerseys, about half way to go. I'm not asking for anything specific.
Put in what ever you think is fair. Once they are paid for, I'll stop
collecting. Mrs. Statman will still be washing them between games.

WEEK 6

Another great night for football, so the game ran a little on the long
side again. We had one rookie, Doug Saugstad (brother of "Andy the
Kid"). The fan count tipped the scales at 3 with repeat performance of
the Bryan Edwards' family (still need pom-poms). Bryan's wife, Sifa,
took a shot at being the GEFNFL staff photographer despite being on
crutches. (one small pic. included.) We had 13 people, which made for
odd sides with Blue volunteering to rotate a guy in and out, until late
in the game when Red lost a player and Schott got traded to Red for a
future draft pick, and the sides became 6 on 6. This one looked evenly
matched to me, but there was a unique dynamic that I didn't take into
account when dividing the player into teams. It even started out with a
trading of TDs. Blue started the scoring with a squirrelly pass from
Wayne Schott to Dave Dubberstein that Dave somehow scrambled into the
endzone though all the traffic. Red followed this with Andy Saugstad's
TD kick off return (see the Play of the Day). After that it was off to
the races for Red, racking up a score of 8 to 4.

Red had several players who passed on their QB rotation, leaving nearly
all of the Quarterbacking to Tyler & Tom. I hadn't accounted for this
when choosing teams, and I only point this out, because it sort of
skewed the stats towards Tom and Tyler. Not really a problem, they
deserved them. Blue's players went through full rotations at QB and as
rusher on defense. I'll have to try to balance this in the future.

Stat leader: Tom Sweinberg had the most stats with 3 Passing TDs, 2 TD
Receptions, 1 INT and 1 Sack. Tyler Jones had the most TDs with 4
Passing TDs, 2 TD Receptions. Both deserve a mention here.

Play-of-the-Day: Has to go to Andy Saugstad's Kick off return for a TD,
simply because it is such a rare occurrence in this league. He made the
corner at the first down line, and no one is going to catch him once he
gets past the deep man. Second in the running, was the Doug Saugstad to
Todd Miller lateral pass, then the Todd Miller pass to a diving David
Southgate, low in the front of the endzone, for a TD. Unfortunately for
Doug, the TD Pass goes to Todd. Good play though.

Injuries: Wayne Schott tweaked a muscle or tendon in his right forearm,
still tender.

Notes:
1) Still collecting funds for jerseys. Put in what ever you think is
fair. Once they are paid for, I'll stop collecting.
2) Remember C.J. Tippery from last week? Rumor has it, we need to
watch for him to appear on a reality show later this TV viewing season.
I'll try to get more details as to when and which network he will be on.
He probably can't talk about until it has aired, but I figured I'd give
it a free plug.

WEEK 7 - Rained out

WEEK 8

Another great night for football, probably our coolest night so far, but
it didn't get to the freezing point, yet. It being Halloween, there were
many kids walking by for "Trick or Treats". The fan count was low, at
only 1 living and 1 undead. The living one was Tracy Brown's little
one, fully equipped with a Tonka Truck. Undead one was "Death", who
made a stealthy appearance, complete with robes and scythe.

We had 13 people with one side or the other rotating out a player, who
would then pull double duty as baby sitter, before rotating into the
other team. It makes the stats a little funny to read, as some players
appear on both teams. This went on until late in the game when a 3
players left, and the sides became 5 on 5.

Blue got a the jump on Red, with 4 unanswered TDs, helped largely by a
few quick interceptions. Around this time Blue was in the red zone, and
was moving toward the south endzone when "Death" appeared there,
standing perfectly still on the sidelines. After each play we would
look up and "Death" would be standing in a different place, as if he
just popped into the new location. At first he was at the back of the
endzone, then the 5 yard line, then the goal line and then he was gone.
At this point Dan Landreman made the "Play-of-the-Day" that started the
scoring for Red. Blue scored only one TD after that point, as Red made
it a close game, by pulling to within one TD of the lead. Final score
Blue 5 and Red 4. "Death" apparently wanted a more even match.

Stat leaders: There were three. Rich Vanden Boogard with 1 Passing TDs,
1 TD Receptions, and 2 INTs. Shaun Denor with 1 Passing TD, 2 TD
Receptions and 1 INT. Dan Landreman with 1 Passing TDs, 2 INTs, and 1
INT for a TD.

Play-of-the-Day: Has to go to Dan Landreman's 99 yard interception that
went for a TD. I'm guessing that by the time he got a handle on it, he
was on the one yard line, in front of the goal posts. Quickly taking it
out to the right sidelines he went the distance, to get Red's scoring
started.

Injuries: I think Rich Vanden Boogard tweaked a finger.

Notes:
1) Still collecting funds for jerseys. Getting closer to putting this
to rest. The large turn out is helping, Thanks.
2) I think I need an E-mail for Shaun Denor. Can someone forward this to
him?

WEEK 9

It's getting progressively cooler but that all seems forgotten once we
get the game underway. The fans seem to be more adversely affected by
the cold, 2 kids walked by but no one stopped to watch.

We had 13 people with Blue rotating out a player, Mahesh left (I think
he was under dressed for the cold) shortly before Rich and we were still
stuck rotating a player . Late in the game we switched having the extra
man on the Red team. It's getting a little cold to be having a man on
the sidelines.

Blue got it going first and never let Red get ahead. Red was putting
together long drives but was having trouble getting into the end zone.
This game probably has the most rushing TDs scored in a single game that
I can recall, a total of 4. With 3 rookies in the game there was plenty
of explaining to do, such things like 3 second delay rush, holding & no
fumble dead ball rules. Red managed to tie it up before the last TD.
Then Blue got the final TD to win with a score of 4 to 3 in a rather low
scoring affair.

Stat leader: David Southgate with 2 TD Receptions, and 1 Rushing TDs
and a Sack.

Play-of-the-Day: One play that was worth mentioning here was Rookie
Paul Houser's Long Rushing TD. I think it was from about the 50 yard
line. Another play was one of David Southgate's TD's receptions. It was
a long pass to the end zone, but I can't remember who threw it, Todd
Miller or Rich Vanden Boogard. (I lost the last ten years of my life at
Mickey G's after the game, so my memory is failing me.)

Injuries: None that I'm aware of.

Notes:
1) Still collecting funds for jerseys. Getting closer to putting this
to rest. The large turn out is helping, Thanks.
2) Mahesh has a jersey.

WEEK 10

A little sporadic light rain and temperatures in the low 50s did not
deter the our 3 most devoted fans from showing up. That would be the
Edwards family. We had 11 players, with Blue rotating out a player, it
was soon found out that being on the sidelines with the little ones, was
more exhausting than being on the field. Player would come back on the
field to get a break. Cayla & Brenda started out as cheerleaders
(complete with pom-poms) first cheering for Daddy's team (Red), and then
for the Blue Team. Later, as the game got tighter, they switched to
being referees, they put on some black & white stripes provided by the
Waukesha Park & Rec, just to keep things from getting out of hand (see
picture). Mahesh showed only to return a jersey, and dashed our hopes of
evening the sides.

It was sort of a see-saw battle from the beginning with Red staying a TD
or two ahead most of the game. Once again there was a large number of
rushing TD's. At one point, Rich Kelnofer was heard yelling, "I don't
respect your speed!" as Wayne Schott broke out for a 20 yard QB
scramble. It was a "Career Day" for Rich. Blue managed to tie it up
about the beginning of the 4th quarter. But, Red followed up with 2
more TDs and Red got the win with a final score of 6 to 4.

Stat leader: Tom Sweinberg with 1 TD Pass, 1 TD Receptions, and 1
Rushing TDs and 2 Sacks. Just short of the quinella.

Play-of-the-Day: I can't remember if it was Dave Dubberstein or Ryan
August, who made the long, deep 40+ yard throw to Nick Schott, but
despite his lack of experience Nick went up for the ball, fought off the
defender for it, and came down with the catch.

Injuries: Wayne Schott tweaked a right knee and went out for the last
couple of series. Seems OK, now but I won't know until I run on it.

1) Still collecting funds for jerseys. Getting closer to putting this
to rest. The large turn out is helping, Thanks.

WEEK 11 - SUPERBOWL

It was bit on the cold side (in the upper 30s) with a stiff breeze out
of the north. We had 12 players, the first even sides in weeks. Two of
our original founders (back in 1976) joined our ranks this week, Bill
Ray and Cliff Pautz. Bill added to his consecutive season streak (26
seasons) & Cliff punched in as the oldest player to ever take the field
in the league (at 53). Both picked up additional stats during the game.
The fan count topped out at 4, with the Edwards family, who watched from
the luxury box seats (a warmed up truck in the parking lot) and Gary
Sima, who showed to see if we needed a beer afterwards (silly question).

After trading a couple of TDs, Red got up by one or two and kept that
lead for most of the game. This game was one of the more physical games
I've seen, with plenty of good blocking seen in all phases of the game,
and several good foot races. The game went late into the evening and we
had already called for a last score to end the game. Blue scored that
TD, to pull within one TD of Red. Red had the opportunity to end the
game with a 6 to 5 lead but chose to play for at least one more drive.
This set up Tyler Jone's 90 interception for a TD, that ended the game
in a tie. So the Superbowl ended in a final score of 6 to 6. The media
& the fans will forever hound me with comparisons with Bud Selig and
Baseball's All-Star game for ending in a tie, but football can end in a
tie, I believe the NFL Superbowl can come down to a coin toss. Not
really necessary in our case. They were all winners.

Stat leader: Rookie Dan Wucherer with 3 TD Pass, 1 TD Reception, and 1
Sack.

Play-of-the-Day: (There were 3 of them.)

From about the 15 yard line, QB Rich Kelnofer pitched back to
Dan Wurcherer, which invited the rush in without delay. In the mean
time, the left side receivers ran off the defenders deep into the end
zone. Rich became the blocker, and the center, Tracy Brown, released,
wide open, into a swing route to the left side. Dan made the TD pass to
Tracy look easy. This play completely exploited the defense, and was
very well designed and executed.

At about the goal line Andy Saugstad picked off a pass taking it
up the right sideline for the entire 100 yard distance with QB Wayne
Schott in hot pursuit. Wayne Schott's knee has apparently suffered no
ill effects from last week's game. Maybe now they will respect my
speed...

A pass thrown from about midfield was picked off by Tyler Jones
at about the 10 yard line. He went the distance. He first faked a
couple of directions, Dave Dubberstein just picked a block to make,
hoping that Tyler would get behind him. It sprung him up the left side
line where further blocks by Bill Ray Jr. & a triple block by Wayne
Schott allowed him to go the distance.

Injuries: Cliff Pautz tightened up by the last series or two, and
stepped out at the end.

Thanks for a great season guys! It's the most fun I have all year!
Maybe we will try a Saturday game in December. Pro Bowl?

WEEK 12 - PRO BOWL

It was in the low 40's, no wind, all in all, not a bad day to play
football. Our regular field, was already taken, so we set up a field
next to it. They had about 20 people, and were playing full contact
tackle, including body slam type tackles and diving for fumbles without
helmets. (They didn't have anyone over 25 in the bunch, and I don't
expect them to have very long careers.) Our fan count was a 2, Randy
Zillmer's boys, I presume. No one won the Prairie School Raffle, so
better luck next time.

We had 12 players. A few weeks ago, at the bar, David Southgate
suggested putting the old timers against the younger guys. Sure, he
disavows any knowledge of that conversation now, but it was the basis
for the sides I picked, whether he suggested it or not. The first
quarter was sort of neck and neck with Blue getting out to a slight 3 to
2 lead. For about the two quarters, there was little scoring and a big
struggle for field position, which included, surprise, surprise, a Red
Team punt! Blue added on 2 more TD in the fourth quarter for a final
score of 5 to 2.

Stat leaders: I'm just going with everyone who had four stats:
Dan Landreman with 2 TD Receptions, an INT, and
1 Sack.
Rich Vanden Boogard with 1 TD Pass and 3 INTs
Tyler Jones with 1 TD Pass, 2 INTs and a Sack
Tom Sweinberg with 2 TD Passes, 1 INT and a Sack

Play-of-the-Day: (I remember several, here they are in order)

On the first drive it was Wayne Schott, on a simple ten yard
sweep around the right side to the end zone, it ended abruptly at the
one yard line, on a de-cleating hit by Dan Landreman. This was one hit,
our absentee fans are going to regret missing, it's not very often
you're going to see Schott flipped end for end. This play was followed
by a 1 yard QB sneak for a TD, by the still groggy Wayne Schott, who
could only agree that nobody would expect him to run again.

Dan Rhode had a really nice long pass 40+ yards to Dan Landreman
in the end zone. Dan dropped it in, perfectly.

One play was a sort of a tip drill. These are my best guesses as
to who was all involved, I am only sure of the one who caught it. It
was a Tyler Jones pass from about the 30 yard line, I can't remember who
all tipped it. It was first tipped by a Blue Player (Tom Sweinberg?)
then by a Red Player (Rich Vanden Boogard?), then there was the
crossing, diving grab by David Southgate, who ended up on his back on
the 1 yard line.

The last play was from about the 15 yard line. Tom Sweinberg
does a backward pass to Tyler Jones, who had backed up from the right
wideout position. Tyler, then fires it to the left side of the end zone
for Ryan August. A trick play that worked very, very well.

Injuries: Wayne Schott with a hip pointer. Monday, I was listed as
"doubtful", by Tuesday I was listed as merely "questionable" for a game
this weekend.

-------
Tentatively, I thought we might try it at 12:00 Noon on Sunday. (Gives
me an extra day to heal.) Then we could find a place to watch the Packer
Game (kick off 3:15PM). Sporty's maybe? It might be a "Snow Bowl"?
Or maybe the Norlight guys will sponsor a "Norlight-Guardians of Data
Bowl"? We'll think of a name before then.
