GEFNFL - 2004 Game Summaries
WEEK 1
Huge turn out for the opening game of the GEFNFL season! With up to
17 players we were tempted to trim to 6 per side and do substitutions,
but we didn't come out to play to sit on the sidelines, so we went
with 8 on 8. With 8 on a side, we opted to keep 2 players in for
blocking. Fan turn out was at 4, the Edward's family, and even one
person from Norlight.
Blue pulled ahead with a 2 TD lead early, and if memory serves, even
a 3 to 0 lead, but only managed one more TD against Red's next
4 touchdowns. Red won 4 to 3.
Play of the Day: Goes to David Southgate for the rushing TD he scored
on a reverse from about 5-10 yards out. A very tough play, with so
many defenders on the field.
Stat Leader: Dave Dubberstein with 2 Passing TDs, one receiving TD
and 3 INTs

WEEK 2
Another large turn out (16 players) and another great weather night
for football. So we were 8 on 8 until someone left early and had to
do substitutions on Blue to go to 7 on 7. Fan turn out was at
about 6, including the 3-legged dog. The Operation Football helicopter
made a pass at the field to see what was going on, but we didn't
attract much interest.
Kind of a back and forth battle this time with Blue coming out on top
with 4 TDs and Red coming up with 3 1/3 TDs. Yes, the only thing
missing in this game was a Field goal, Rich Kelnofer has come up with
only the second safety since we began keeping stats. (Because a TD counts
as 1 in the stats, a safety counts as 1/3 of a point.)
Plays of the Day: I picked two this time...
Rich Kelnofer's sack appeared to be sort of a coverage sack,
with the QB waiting for the last moment to pick a target, Rich
snuck in and got the sack in the end zone. Rich has now tied
the Jason Schneck (1998) for single game, single season, and
lifetime safeties. This is very likely to earn him a spot in
the record books for quite some time.
John Wischnefski had a INT return for a TD from about the 50 yard
line. The QB had the best shot at getting him at about the 20,
but John had the Farve-like savvy to shout at Schott, his intention
to pitch it back. The QB hesitated to cover the pitch. John faked
pitch and put his head down to get it in the endzone on his own.
Stat Leader: I give Mike Horwath's 1 TD Pass, 1 TD Rec, and 2 Sacks a slight
edge over Dan Landreman's 1 TD, Ec, 2 INTS and a Sack, just based on the
TD count.
Injuries are starting to pile up: Gerois Di Marco - elbow, Wayne Schott - knee,
Dave Dubberstein - neck. Let's try to be safe out there...

WEEK 3
Average turn out for the 3rd game of the GEFNFL season, with 10 players the
game dynamics change considerably with 5 on 5, scoring goes up. Fan turn
out was at 4.
Blue pulled ahead early, forcing Red to match touchdowns one for one, in a
hard fought battle. The Packers (opps, I mean Red) could never quite catch
up. The difference maker in this game may well have been the Play-of-the-Day.
Blue won the contest 6 to 5.
Play-of-the-Day: Goes to Bryan Edwards with the interception at about the
50 yard line. From there he managed to weave amongst several defenders and
make in into a touchdown as well.
Stat Leader: Tom Sweinberg with 3 Passing TDs, one receiving TD and an INT.

WEEK 4
Rained out
WEEK 5
Yes, the rain cleared out for Week 5's game and the temperatures stayed
surprisingly warm for the evening. We started with 12 players for 6 on 6 for
most of the game. Late in the game 2 players left dropping us to 5 on 5 for
the last couple of series. Fan turn out was at 1 plus a dog. The "Operation
Football" Helicopter made a half circle pass around us, I'm not sure what
they think of us, or if they shot any footage for the 10:00 news. But, they
were really looking for the Waukesha West Game and saw our lights.
Blue pulled ahead early, hmmm, this is getting to be a theme. Red fought back,
finally pulling the score to a 4 to 4 tie, on the last series.
Play of the Day: Goes to Rich Vanden Boogard, for his 25+ yard rushing TD scramble.
Stat Leader: Andy Saugsted with 4 Receiving TDs, if it weren't for Andy, Red
wouldn't have score, he was in on every TD Red scored.
For the Record: I missed a sack for Todd Polczynski in Week 2, He said it was
no big deal, but I've updated the permanent record anyway.

WEEK 6
I missed my calling as a weatherman, the rain cleared out with plenty of time
to dry off the field, and get our first cool weather game in, as I had predicted.
We started with 12 players with one straggler coming in to make 13. So we
played 6 on 6 with Red rotating a man in, because they already pretty good lead
by the time the 13th showed up. Fan turn out was at 3, plus a dog. No chopper
coverage this week.
Red pulled ahead early, I believe 3 to 0, before Blue's luck began to change.
Riding on the back of Ryan "Antonio Freeman" August (or rather with Ryan on his
own back), Blue slowly pulled itself back into the game and took the lead by one.
The game went quite long, and more than a few players were getting some muscle
stiffness, when Wayne Schott took it in the nose for making a down field block
on the last drive. He was down for the count, and the game abruptly ended on
that play. Blue won the contest 4 to 3.
Play of the Day: Goes hands down to Ryan August. On 4th & goal to go from the
10 yard line, QB Todd Miller fires a pass to Ryan August at the right front side
of the end zone. This pass was well covered and blocked by Dan Nemecek. There
is no way any of the Blue Team is going to get to this ball, unless, of course,
someone was on their back, one yard deeper in the endzone and still paying
attention. Ryan was there to make just that kind of catch, with outstretched
arms and on his back, he pulls in Blue's first TD of the night. Very reminiscent
of Antonio Freeman's Monday Night overtime catch against the Vikings.
As if that wasn't enough, Ryan was part of a critical first down catch that had
the ball popped up about 3 times before finally making the catch. To bad we don't
have instant replay, these would have been neat to see again.
Stat Leader: Todd Miller with 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TDs, 2 INT's and a sack.
For the Record: I made 2 corrections to last weeks stats, Mike Horwath, & Dave
Dubberstein each had an additional INT. I've updated the permanent record.

WEEK 7
There was a light misting rain as we were getting started, and then again
later in the 3rd Quarter, but for the most part the bad weather held off until
after the game was over. We started with 14 players, as the 15th guy pulled
something while warming up and chose not to play. So we played 7 on 7 most
of the night with 2 guys leaving early in the 4th quarter dropping us to 6 on 6.
Fan turn out was at 2 plus a dog. Tracy's little guy stuck it out the whole game.
Kind of a low scoring affair this week. Red had several long drives that did
not produce any points. Blue was having some offensive struggles of their own,
but managed to scored first. At couple of points, in the game, I thought the
winner might be determined by the safety that was scored early in the game.
Gradually as the game progressed each team began to score an occasional TD,
ending with Bill Ray Jr.'s short yardage TD run for Blue. Blue won the
contest 3 to 2 1/3.
Play of the Day: Another safety! After one of Red's early long drives, left
Blue to start on the one yard line, Wayne Schott pulled off a coverage sack.
The QB looked left & right for a target, and finally covered the ball to take
the sack in the end zone. Wayne has now tied, Rich Kelnhofer (2004)and Jason
Schneck (1998) for single game, single season, and lifetime safeties.
Stat Leader: Dave Dubberstein with 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TDs, and 1 INT's.
Something in my head tells me I missed a stat, here or there. But a low
scoring game might just look that way to me a few days later.
A couple of guys still owe for lights, this is difficult for me to track,
so I'm counting on you guys to make good.

WEEK 8
Prairie Field was wet from the rain earlier in the day, and muddy enough
for us to have to dig it out of our cleats once in the while. It was surprisingly
warm weather for this late in the year, the temperature was in the 70s.
Most of us playing in shorts because and worked up a pretty good sweat.
We started with 12 players, so we had 6 on 6 until late in the game, when
the 2 younger guys needed to leave to go chase girls, dropping us to 5 on 5.
Fan turn out was at only one.
This was a see-saw battle with Red getting up first, then Blue up by one, back
and forth a couple of times until sometime after 8:00 PM, we had fought it out
to a 5 to 5 tie. Usually when we get are playing 5 on 5, the scoring sort of
opens up, and a lot more points get scored. Instead the defenses got better.
For about the next forty minutes we played for the final TD, which was on a
Wayne Schott pass to Tracy Brown from about the 35 yardline to the left corner
of the endzone. Blue won the contest 6 to 5.
I was going to make the "Play of the Day" mine for picking remarkably even sides,
but I was involved in the real play, that was selected anyway...
Play of the Day: This one, was not anything like we drew up in the huddle. It
was a completely adlibbed play. Starting from the 35+ yardline, the spike
haired QB, Tracy Brown drops back to scan the field rolling slightly to the left.
Wayne Schott is pass blocking, guiding the defender, deep to Tracy's right side
before losing the block. As the defense closed in on Tracy who still hadn't found
a receiver, Schott, yells for Tracy, who tosses a backward pass to Schott. Schott
is nearly back at the 45 on the right side and picks out Jim Widen in the clear on
the far left side at about the ten yard. Throwing across the field, the long pass
just gets to Jim about the time the defense closed in on him. A quicker and deeper
throw, might have scored. Not bad for something pulled out of the hat.
Stat Leader: Dale Hauser with 2 Receiving TDs, 3 INT's.
For the Record: I think I owe an additional INT to Ed Panelli for the previous week.

WEEK 9
It was a little cooler than we have seen yet this year, but we warmed up as the
game went on. With 13 players we played 7 on 6, Red had the extra man and rotated
a player to the bench all game. Fans? Just the guy and his dog.
Red got up first, offering hope that the sides were even, then Blue fought back
to get the lead and never relinquished it. Blue won the contest rather
decisively 7 to 3.
Play of the Day: There were a bunch and I'm sure I forgot more:
Dale Hauser's full speed interception at about Red's 25 yard line returned for a TD.
Andy Saugstad's nifty reverse run for about 25 yard's.
Andy Saugstad's catch of a 50 yard pass thrown by Dale Hauser (I think) in the
endzone, with 2 defenders on top and slapping at the ball, to end the game.
Rich Kelnhofer's "Hey! I'm alone in the endzone." catch called for, and thrown
by Dave Dubberstein.
Ok, I'll sheepishly add Wayne Schott's back handed, drive saving, first down catch.
Stat Leader: Dale Hauser with 3 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs, 3 INT's including one for a TD.

WEEK 10
It started out pretty cool and got colder as the game went on, by the 3rd
quarter the ground was starting to freeze up. Let that be a warning to
anyone who plays any of our remaining game(s), come prepared to play in the
cold. With 16 players, we played 8 on 8. Six fans swung by, none staying
for very long.
Blue got up first, and never relinquished the lead. It was a very difficult
day for the quarterbacks, with 14 total interceptions. With Blue getting
10 of those interceptions, it was very difficult for Red to get back in the
game. Blue was up by 4 to 0, then Red's defense stepped it up a bit, slowed
Blue's drives to a crawl, at that point Red's, Tracy Brown scored a safety.
The latter half of the game was punctuated only by Tom Sweinberg's rushing
TD for Red, and a late TD by Blue. The game went pretty long again. We
called for last touchdown, to end the game, but after a while ended up calling
it with a last series that turned over on downs. Blue won the contest 5 to 1 1/3.
Despite an injured MCL, this game saw the return of Bill Ray (one of our
original founding fathers (1977)) to the grid-iron to claim the "Most Senior Player"
title from Cliff Pautz. Bill says, at age 53, he's a few months older than Cliff
was at this time last year. Bill had indicated that he would only play a few
series at QB, but stuck it out for the entire game. We needed him to even up the
sides.
Play of the Day: There were 2 runners up:
1) Tom Sweinberg's rushing TD from 20 yards out against 8 defenders, was
just hard to believe.
2) Tracy Brown caps off the "Season of the Safety" by sacking Blue in the
endzone. That is the 3rd safety of the season!
But almost everyone agreed that it was Todd Miller's a-m-a-z-i-n-g mid-field
interception. With a surprising vertical jump (for a white guy), he made a
one handed, back hand grab of the point of the ball as it passed over his head.
It was about as neat of a play, as we have seen, and should have made Sports
Center on ESPN.
Stat Leader: Dale Hauser with 2 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs, 4 INT's and 2 sacks.
Injuries: I don't know about anyone else, but I was pretty banged up after this
one. I have regained the use of my right hand, but am still dealing with a bit
of neck whiplash.
Looking ahead: This coming Friday is our last night game. We do tend to lose
the deer hunters for this one. If there is enough interest after Thanksgiving,
and if the weather holds, we may play a game or two on Saturday or Sunday
afternoons in December. Those games would not require lights or field charge,
and would be free. We may not get our regular field because it would be first
come, first serve, but we have orange cones and can make a field out of the soccer
field, if need be.

WEEK 12 - Pro Bowl
On a sunny December day, with temperatures in the mid 40's, we played the
Saturday Afternoon Edition of GE Friday Night Football. The field conditions
were too muddy & slick on the regular field so we marked a field out in the
well sodded soccer field nearby. After the first set of possessions, we adjusted t
he field length to make it longer. About a half dozen kids attempted to use our
original field, but marked a field out next to us. Originally billed as the
Super Bowl, the nature of the game that was played turned it into something of
a Pro Bowl. With 7 players we played a weird 4 on 3, with the offense having the
extra man. On each possession, a different player was rotated to the offense, so
there was a QB & 3 receivers, but the offense was limited to passing only.
We seemed to be shaking off a little rust from a couple weeks of not playing (just
like a Pro Bowl). I think most of us can remember a dropped pass or two (or four
in my case) that we should have had. The mode of attack seemed to be, move the ball
across the 50 yard line to about the 40, and start taking shots at the end zone.
Since everyone rotated from one team to another and back again during the length
of the game, it was surprising that the scoring was skewed pretty heavily toward
the Red team. Apparently the best performances by each player occurred while playing
on Red. Blue did throw a couple of extra interceptions that ended drives early. It
was sort of a "Barn Burner", a great game for adding to your season stats. Everyone
got at least 3-4 rotations at QB. Red won the contest 7 to 3.
Play of the Day: I had trouble picking one, because of the number of TDs. I settled
on two but I have to apologize to the QBs because I only remember the receiver's names.
These 2 TD catches were mirror images of each other on the field. If memory serves,
both were short yardage plays trying to get the first down in the area of the 50 yard
line. Matt Panelli got the first pass from either Dave or Ryan, as the defender just
missed going for the ball, and Matt stretched out the run for a TD, down the sideline.
Wayne Schott got the second one, on a sharp angled route to the left sideline, dodged
the one defender, and made the sideline run to the end zone.
Edgar Award (for outstanding effort on a play that wasn't quite successful): Tyler Jones
for a nifty kickoff scramble that would have gone the distance if not for the fingertip
tackle by Jay Kieckhafer (at least I think Jay was the one that made that tackle.)
Stat Leader: Ryan August with a total of 3 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs, and 1 INT
including one for a TD.
Notes:
Sadly, I think, I'm going to call this, the end of the season, and hang up the
cleats for another year. Once again, it ranks amongst the most fun I have all year.
You guys added your friends to the list and turned out in record numbers, making
my recruiting job much easier. We managed to get through without any more than
minor injuries, which is good, because not getting hurt, makes it easier to
justify playing another year, to my wife.
Thanks for everyone's cooperation with funding the GEFNFL. Collecting money
cover the $50/game cost from Waukesha Park & Rec. is a pain, but you guys made
that job easy for me, by being prepared. Special thanks goes out to Dave Dubberstein
and Tom Sweinberg, who, along with myself, paid the up front money for Prairie
Field & the lights the entire season. Pat those guys on the back and buy them a
beer once in a while. (The good news, is that because of the awesome turn out, we
have enough cash ahead, that I should be able to cover the difference myself
next year.)
Season Stats? Yeah I'll get to them soon. Bill Ray, I may even work some of those
old stats into the totals. (9 TD passes in a game...oh my)
Thanks again to all the players, and all our fans, you make it worth the effort
every year.
