WEEK 1
Yes, it was nice to lace up the cleats and run around the grid iron colliding with
everyone, again. Great football weather, and a great turn out of 16 players
including 3 rookies. Fan count of 12, most were playing tennis, but there was
one guy was camped out in the middle of the baseball field in a lawn chair, getting
stoned and another that watched from the endzone.
After the Play-of-the-day, which Blue made look easy, your Red & Blue Warriors Battled
it out for the first half, keeping the score within one or two. Then Blue took
command of the game and finished it with a rather decisive 5 to 1 score.
Play of the Day: On the first drive from the mid field stripe, David Southgate
threw a 50+ yard endzone strike to Dale Hauser that was about as nice of a
pass/catch as you are going to see.
Stat Leader: Dale Hauser with 1 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs, and 3 INTs.
Injuries: I don't know about anyone else, but I tweaked and ankle, but otherwise
seem none the worse for wear.

WEEK 2
Great football weather, and a turn out of 11 players. We played 5 on 5 with
one team rotating a player in and out, on changes of possession. After one
full rotation of all players, the extra man was shifted to the other team to
go thru the rotation. This worked pretty well, and keeps most people on the
field, and let's us have all options on offense. Fan count of 15, most were
playing tennis and didn't mind positively comment on our plays. The
Dubberstein family made a rare first appearance, and our new staff photographers
Cindy Drewicz & Jim Piekarski.
As you might expect with 10 players on the field, this was a closer game with
more scoring and fewer interceptions. Blue gained a one TD edge in the first
quarter, and held that edge for most of the game and finished it with a solid
showing of 8 to 5.
Play of the Day: After several hours in the bar and some contemplation over
the weekend, I still didn't have a Play of the Day. But I finally settled on
this one. Ethan Westcot had avoided being the QB last week in his rookie game.
(Please note that in this league you are only a rookie for one game.) He still
didn't want to QB in this game, but Blue was ahead, and we told him with 1 yard
to go to get the mid field 1st down, this was the perfect opportunity to give
it a try. So he draws up the play and calmly throws a 50 yard strike to Andy
Saugstad. So in his first series as QB, Ethan was 1 for 1, and a TD!
Edgar Award: Yes, it comes out yet again. This award is given for outstanding
effort on a play that was not quite successful. Named after Edgar Alexander for
his efforts back in the mid 90s. This Edgar Award goes to Andy Saustad, for
the 30+ yard QB scramble that eluded several sure tackles, as well as eluding
the endzone, by fumbling it out of bounds on the one yard line.
Stat Leader: Andy Saugstad with 2 Passing TDs, 3 Receiving TDs, and 1 INT.
Injuries: Dan Rhode had a rough night, and later heard something pop and left
the game. Hope he's okay.

WEEK 3
Great football weather, and a turn out of 13 players. We played 6 on 6 with
Blue rotating a player in and out, until we started losing players. Christopher
Mullins' Notre Dame Sweatshirt made a rare appearance at this game and was
later seen again at Mickey G's (I think it was trying to get it's picture taken
with the bartender). Fan count of 5 was a meger showing. The Operation Football
helicopter made a pass but didn't seem interested in us this week.
Red jumped ahead right away with a few quick scores. Blue was already playing
catch-up when they lost Southgate, and it didn't get much better for Blue as the
game wore on. It was late in the third quarter by the time Blue finally forced
Red to turn the ball over on downs. Red was having a field day, scoring with
apparent ease. Final score was Red 8 to Blue 3.
Plays of the Day: I stopped at the bar, talked to Claudia, but one play really
didn't come to mind. Red had 3 drives that consisted of 1 play for a TD, for
each drive. But without a game film to refer to, and too many scores by Red,
I won't be able to put the names of the 3 QBs and the 3 receivers in this section,
although they all deserve it.
Edgar Award: I'm giving this to Dale Hauser for the 75+ yard over-throw of Tyler
Jones in the end zone. It's just hard to believe it was over thrown.
Stat Leader: Dale Hauser with 2 Passing TDs, 3 Receiving TDs, and 1 INT.
Injuries: David Southgate went out early with a sore shoulder, not sure if it
was game related, Red was so busy scoring that they didn't even notice until
several drives later. Ed Panelli came up lame early in the last quarter and
sat out the rest of the game. Rich Kelnhopher switched sides to even up the
player count.
I lost the Stats...then I remembered that I had thrown a touchdown myself...
so I dug them out of the trash can...

WEEK 4
Nothing but great nights for football weather, so far. We had a turn out of
12 players so we played 6 on 6 until we lost a player, then Blue started
rotating a player in and out. Fan count of 7, that one again included the
Dubberstein family.
This was a low scoring affair, with several long drives that ended without
scores. Neither Blue nor Red could seem to gain the lead by more than a TD,
Blue was in the lead most of the game. You may have called it a defensive
battle, but the from my perpective it seemed that the offenses were the
ones doing the struggling. Final score was Blue 3 over Red 2.
Play of the Day: Rich Kelnhofer QB scramble up the left side for maybe a
10 yard gain, with Dale Hauser in hot pursuit. This was a sight to see!
Apparently, nobody respects Rich's speed, either.
Stat Leaders: Tied: Bill Woller with 2 Receiving TDs, and 1 INT and Tom
Sweinberg with 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TDs, and 1 Sack.
Injuries: Ed Panelli (who admittedly returned to action, too early from
last week's injurgy) came up lame again in the about the third quarter
and sat out the rest of the game.
The Adventures of Christopher Mullins' Notre Dame Sweatshirt: Like the
Roaming Gnome, the sweatshirt made it to the game and later made it to
the Matt Panelli send off at Mickey G's. Clearly Mickey's is getting to
be a weird place. Claudia, our regular bartender posed for a picture
wearing the the sweatshirt, but sadly declined premission to post it on

As you all know, Wayne usually sends out the Game Summaries. However,
because the play of the day came from Wayne, and knowing how humble he is,
I'm privileged to write the Play of the Day section for this week's summary.
WEEK 5
It was in the 90s only a few days ago, so the drop to the upper 40s with a
14 MPH mile north winds we had a big change in weather. The winds died
down in the second half, so the weather was otherwise not a factor. We
had a turn out of 10 players and played 5 on 5 all night. Fan count of 7,
that one again included the Dubberstein family , who arrived in time to see
one of Dave's TD passes.
I sort of missed the longest play of game, despite throwing it. The line
of scrimmage was at about Red's own 5 yard line, due to a Wayne Schott
muff of a kick off. So, Wayne screwed up, he gets to QB for the long field.
The first down throw is from the end zone, a little 7 yard slant pass to
Ryan August. This is where Rich got hurt, rushing, so I checked on him,
while Ryan, somehow got outside of the defenders and sprinted down the entire
sideline for the 95 yard TD. Weird night for me, 2 plays as QB, both for TDs!
This was a pretty even battle. The score was usually tied, or with Red up
by only one, for most of the game. It was the final TD which pushed Red up
by 2. Final score was Red 7 to Blue 5.
Play of the Day: There were plenty of nice catches made tonight, Ethan and
Dale each made a pair of TD catches that sort of made it look easy. I
think Tyler Jones even took the Banana play for the distance. There was
even the old, tight-end fall down and go out for a short TD pass. But Rich
Kelnhofer wanted to write up the play of the day:
"After playing for a couple years, often lined up opposite of Wayne, I've
learned to respect his uncanny speed and release. However, I was
confident that Blue's speedsters; consisting of Dale, Dave, and Ethan, along
with the height of Jay, we would contain Wayne. On the play of the day,
Wayne was the QB and Blue's defense was doing a respectable job of shutting
him down. With only 10 to 15 yards away from the goal line, he dropped back
for a fake pass. His O-line sealed the blocked down allowing Wayne to roll
right but found all his receivers covered tight. Wayne then decided to kick
it into high gear towards the goal. I saw that Ethan and Dale had containment
and Wayne would have to run out of bounds on the 1 yard line. At that moment,
Wayne stretched his arm with the ball and broke the plane of the goal, at which
point he exclaimed, "Nobody respects my reach!" Thus giving the GEFNFL a new
saying to compliment the oft used "Nobody respects my speed!". - Rich
Stat Leaders: Dale Hauser with 2 Passing TDs, 2 Receiving TDs, and 1 INT.
Injuries: Rich Kelnhofer turned an ankle late in the game, while rushing Wayne
Schott and trying to avoid the collision after the throw.
The Adventures of Christopher Mullins' Notre Dame Sweatshirt: Is traveling to
northern Wisconsin to see if it can break the Packer losing streak by attending
the game. Then it will be heading to Eagle River for a little vacation.
Corrections: Matt Panelli & Ethan Westcot each had INTs in Week 4 that didn't
get posted. (This usually happens when I throw them.) It has been corrected
in the permanent record.

WEEK 6
It was excellent weather, the warm afternoon lingered into the evening,
prompting us to play as long as we could. We had a turn out of 13 players
and played 6 on 6 with Red rotating a player in and out. Fan count of 5,
that once again included the Dubberstein family , and a couple of kids that
think they have a future as sports announcers. Their knowledge of plays was
limited however to the Hail Mary, and Touchdown. I was in too much of a
hurry to get last week's message ready for Rich's final touches, to mention
that one of our founding father's made a visit to the Week 5 Game and took
a stab at the staff photographer job.
For as many players as we had it was nice to see that everyone got something
in the stats column! That's indicator to me that we were spreading the ball
around enough, for everyone to get a chance at it.
Once again we had a pretty even battle. The score was tied a couple of times,
until the 4 to 4 tie was broken by Blue, who tacked a couple of unanswered TDs
on in the 4th quarter to win the game. Final score was Blue 6 to Red 4.
Play of the Day: For the moment I'm goin to retire Rich Kelnhofer from writing
the Play of the Day, but I have to admit that he did crack me up last week.
Maybe I should leave this open to any "Guest Writers", who can get me a Play of
the day by Monday after the game. (Actually I'd probably accept contributions
to any part of this, by anyone who was at the game.)
The Play of the Day was a Hook'n Ladder, play by the Red Team from about Blue's
15-20 yard line. Steve Dubberstein was the QB, the play was sent in by Dave
Dubberstein, no doubt trying to get his brother on the stat sheet. On the left
side the wide out Bill Jr. was sent on a 5 yard square out. Dave Dubberstein
was in the left slot, line up to block, but was to run a left slant. The center,
Todd Polczynski was also sent on a slant into the left short zone, leaving Wayne
Schott to pick up the blocking at the line. (No, this is not the play, where
Dan Rhode got de-cleated.) After a look at Dale Hauser, the decoy on the right,
Steve executes the pass to the slot receiver, Dave. Someone on Blue yelled out
to watch for the pitch. Sure enough, Dave takes a few steps toward the defense,
pitches back to Bill Ray Jr., and becomes Bill's lead blocker. A couple of Bill
Jr.'s niffty moves later and it was a touchdown. Considering how many things
didn't work as planned, this one went exactly as drawn up in the huddle.
Edgar Award: To Jay Keickhafer for the amazing sideline catch of a very high pass,
to get a first down, as the defender flew by and for that 40-45 yard scammper,
after the catch, that almost got him into the endzone.
Stat Leaders: Andy Saugstad with 2 Passing TDs, 2 Receiving TDs, and 3 INTs.
Injuries: The game went pretty late, and might have gone on quite a bit longer,
if Andy Saugstad hadn't dropped on a turned an ankle, while chasing Dave Dubberstein
who was speeding down field for the interception. He seemed to be okay, walking
and bending it, despite our initial concern that Uncle Dan was going to have to
bring him in for x-rays.
The Adventures of Christopher Mullins' Notre Dame Sweatshirt: Well it spent a
day at Lambeau, and allowed the Packers to score 52 unanswered points against the
Saints. Pictures from that day can be found at:

WEEK 7
It was another excellent day for football, once again we played as long as we could.
We had a turn out of 14 players and played 7 on 7, that is, until Ryan left, forcing
Red to start rotating a player in and out. Fans? Zero! But maybe the parking
situation warded them away. Prairie School was having some sort of Halloween party.
As I mentioned last week, one of our founding father's made a visit to the Week 5
Game and took a stab at the staff photographer job. I've started to collect some
of some Cliff Pautz's camera work, you can decide if we should keep on as photgrapher.
Only one picture in there so far...
http://www.wschott.com/gefnfl/Cliffs_clicks.htm
Blue got off to a quick start, and held the lead all game. At one point they were
ahead by 3, with a few quick scores, off of Red drives that ended in interceptions.
Including a rare interception for TD by Tracy Brown, which was the Play of the Day.
Midway in the third quarter Blue was plagued by the dreaded "Ryan Effect". Ryan
August had to leave early and for some reason this ended Blue's scoring. Red had
started to get it's interception problems under control, partly by throwing several
passes in a row to tall & long armed Jay Kieckhafer. Red managed to scratch it's
way back to within one with the final TD. Final score was Blue 5 to Red 4.
Play of the Day: Might have gone to the red bean bag. The one we use for the ball
marker to keep track of the line of scrimmage. It single-handedly took Dale Hauser
out of kick-off coverage as he stepped on it at a full run, causing him to lose footing.
However, inanimate objects are not eligible for Play of the Day.
Instead, the Play of the Day was rare interception for a TD by Tracy Brown. To describe
this play, I have to go back to the previous play. Tracy was in postion to intercept
about ten yards down field in the right flat. It hit him in the worst possible place---
the hands. And he dropped it, much to his own dismay. Surprisingly enough Red came
back the next play, with a throw to almost the same identical spot, with Tracy in nearly
the same position. It hit him in the hands high, and again at about chest level where
he finally got a handle on it. Reversing fields Tracy squeeked between two potential
tackles, and with defenders from the opposit side still in pursuit, galloped the 30
yards or so for the TD.
Stat Leaders: It's a tie. Tracy Brown has maybe a slight edge with 1 Passing TD,
2 Receiving TDs, and an INT for a touchdown, and Dan Rhode had 2 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD,
and an INT.
Injuries: I think I'm the only one anything note worthy. I seem to be suffering from
some cumulative heal spur problems.
The Adventures of Christopher Mullins' Notre Dame Sweatshirt: Chris Mullen was finally
goaded into joining us for a game, if for no other reason than to be reunited with his
beloved Notre Dame Sweatshirt. Seems they are going their separate ways for now.

WEEK 8
It was another excellent day for football, once again we played as long as we
could. We had a turn out of 12 players and played 6 on 6, we lost Jay later in
the game and had to do some rearranging that put Dan Wurcherer on Red. Fans 2.
Welcome to Sharath for his rookie game. His first ever American Football game.
We generally consider you a rookie for only one game in this league, but most
of us have played somewhere or sometime before. Either way, he managed to get
a nice catch early and even made the stats with a sack.
This one started out neck and neck but Red started capitalizing on their drives
more often, getting better field position on turn over and pretty much kept Blue
from catching back up in the game. Blues was clearly intimidated by the
thundering short legged footsteps of Rich & Tom, as seen by the rash of dropped
passes. Final score was Blue 4 to Red 7.
Play of the Day: Goes to Ethan Westcot and Dave Dubberstein. This was a kick
return by Blue. Dave Dubberstein returns it right up to the first down marker
like a good veteran, not being tagged yet he traveled left along the first down
line toward the center of the field. Since Dave wasn't crossing the line and
giving up the first down, Tom Sweinberg goes in for the tag. Dave then pitches
it back to Ethan, who shoots past the first down marker and with the help of a
Todd Polczynski block near the 10 yard line, scores a TD on the Kick return.
A second runner up was Blue's running of a reverse that went exactly as planned,
even if it was only 10-15 yards. Todd Polczyski does a forward shuffle pass to
Ethan Westcot coming across from the left between QB and the center. Ethan makes
a quick pitch back to Dave Dubberstein who was coming from the right. Todd is
now lead blocking for Dave as they get around the left side for the 10+ yards.
I mention this one, because I can't recall ever seeing anyone run reverse, much
less one that actually worked.
Edgar Award: To Tracy Brown for his entire game. He had a very good game, but
was the night was filled with plays that were almost much bigger plays. He
missed blocking a couple of passes with early jumps. He had an INT at Red's own
5 yard line and could have returned it for much more had he not completely tackled
himself 5-10 yards later. He even somehow managed and INT while lying flat on
his back, clearly there was no return yardage after that catch.
Stat Leaders: Tyler Jones by one sack over Tom Sweinberg with 2 Passing TDs,
1 Receiving TDs, an INT and a Sack.

WEEK 9
Okay, this part is getting redundant, it was yet another excellent day for
football, once again we played as long as we could. The football gods must be
making up for all the bad weather they've thrown at us in the past years.
We had a turn out of 13 players and played 6 on 6, with Red rotating a guy
until they lost Rich. Fans count was 6, including 4 that bought their own
lawn chairs. Rich's 2 kids showed up to cheer Dad's TD catch, and the Saugstads
had 2 of their own followers. (Which threatened to steal the car when they
thought the game was going too long.)
Red had the edge for the entire game in this battle. Red outscored Blue by
at least 2 touchdowns to every one. Making several smart plays, including
Dave Dubberstein's knock down of a sure INT (in the stat book) in favor of
better field position for his team. Final score was Red 7 to Blue 3.
Play of the Day: Goes to David Southgate. It was 4th down and a yard to go
for the first down at mid field. Southgate calls running play, a sweep to
the right. Jay Kieckhafer was the sole reciver in the left wide out position,
basically the decoy. Tom Sweinberg signaled the blocking assignments at the
line before the snap, by Tracy Brown to David Southgate. Tracy Brown ties
up the rusher while, Wayne Schott, in the right slot, took the short zone man
to the outside. Dale Hauser came from the left slot to plug the middle and
Tom Sweinberg at the right wide out position, put a helmet on the deep man in
the right zone and moved him to the inside. Southgate sweeps to the right side
and easily picks up the first down. With all the blockers in the right places
and still engaged, the Red Sea of jersey's parted, allowing him to shoot the
gap for the additional 50 yards and the TD. You might even say "Leading the
Blues to freedom." Yes, it was a thing of beauty.
Stat Leaders: If I just count the marks in the columns, it would be Dan Rhode
had the most TDs with 1 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs and 1 Rushing TD, Andy
Saugstad with 1 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TDs, and 2 INTs and David Southgate
with 1 Rushing TD, 2 INTs and a Sack. All of them get a mention here.

WEEK 10
This may well have been our last decent weather for football, and once
again we played as long as we could. We had a turn out of 12 players and
played 6 on 6. Fans count was 6, including Gary Sima's boy, Andy.
This was very nearly a rematch of the previous week, with only a few minor
roster changes. It was I was not entirely surprised that the outcome was
nearly the same, but still think sides wear relatively even. Red had the
edge for the entire game in this battle, thanks to Ryan August's early INT
and Play of the Day. Blue had a serious case of the drops, both on offense,
and defense. Dozens of passes and several sure INTs. So much so, that at
least one drive had to be engineered by calling several running plays. Red
again outscored Blue by at least 2 touchdowns to every one. Final score
was Red 7 to Blue 4.
Play of the Day: Ryan reminded the Red team at least 4 times during game,
that he already had the Play of the Day. And yes, he was right. On the
very first play from scrimmage, with Blue at their own 20, Red defender, Ryan
August jumps a pass, on a right square out, at about the 30. Already with a
good head of steam, he streaks down the sideline, easily getting into end zone,
untouched. We only get a couple of interceptions that go for touchdowns each
year. It's hard to top that for Play of the Day.
Stat Leaders: David Southgate with 1 Passing TDs, 2 Receiving TDs, and a Sack,
and Andy Saugstad with 1 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TDs, and 2 INTs. (Gee, isn't
that what Andy got last week?)
Lost?: Ryan August seems to have lost his football last week. Did anyone
else pick it up?
Next: Week 11 is the Super Bowl!

WEEK 11 -Super Bowl
Well, the cold weather finally snuck up on us. The field wasn't frozen when
we got there, but by the time the players were introduced to the crowd, the
middle of the field was solid. It became something of a skating rink in the
middle, well, at least for the lighter players it did. We had a turn out of
10 players, including one rookie that usually plays soccer, so it was a 5 on 5
game. Fans count was well over a dozen, including the Duberstein's, the Browns
(complete with a picnic blanket) and a luxury box seats in the East wing, 2nd
floor of Prairie School. I counted at least 6 people up there over-looking the
north end zone.
This was more of a sew-saw battle, than we have seen for a few weeks. The scoring
started slow, but Red got ahead first. With only 5 on 5, it tended to be a man to
man defense rather than the zone defense that was played for the bulk of the season.
Everyone got at least one mark in the stats, including rookie, Dorian McFarlane with
a TD catch. He will be one to watch as he gets more American football experience.
Tyler Jones & Todd Polczynski were in a neck and in a race for Super bowl MVP for
most of the game, ending with a tie of 5 stats each. Wayne Schott trailed them both,
with 4 stats, sneaking back into the race with 2 sacks (...ties the single game sack
record for this season with 2 other players). Tracy Brown's game improved when his
fan base decided to head home early, and when he started making plays from his more
traditional flat-on-his-back position. Rich Kelnhofer had a TD catch as well as the
Edgar Award. Jay Kieckhafer picked up his first interception, threw a TD and was
making full use of his tremendous reach, making several key tackles on defense. Bill
Ray Jr. quietly chocked up a TD receptions, a rushing TD and an interception. Dave
Dubberstein finally nabbed one of those pesky interceptions. Dan Rhode had the TD
catch that made the Play of the Day. (I'm not usually this detailed with player critiques,
but hey, it's the Super Bowl!)
Blue fought their way back into the lead, of 4 to 3, by about the early third quarter.
But Blue gradually lost ground to Red, despite favorable rulings by the refs. Never saw
a team that didn't want a good spot from the refs before. Final score was Red 6 to Blue 4.
Play of the Day: I thought the play of the day would be Tracy Brown's 45 yard TD pass to
Tyler Jones who exploited the man to man defense for the final 30 yards. However, the last
play of the game changed my mind. Playing for the last TD, Red had crossed the first down
marker, only to be pushed back behind it, by a sack by a determined Blue defense (Jay
Kieckhafer, I think). Running out of downs with more than 55 yards to the end zone, Tyler
Jones found Bill Ray Jr. in the front of the end zone and hit with the pass about waist
high. Unlike most tip drills, it bounced off of Bill, sideways, and no higher than his
waist, toward the center of the goal line. Somehow, Dan Rhode dove forward to snatch the
ball a foot short of hitting the ground, scoring the final TD and getting his stat for the
day. (He was that last one without a stat, right up to the last play.)
Edgar Award: The award for an outstanding effort, in a play that wasn't completely successful.
This has to go to Rich Kelnhofer. The crafty tight end, found an open spot on the right flat
and took a 15 yard pass another 33 yards with a full head of steam, to the 2 yard line.
Stopped only because, Tyler Jones raced all the way from the left side to make the tackle.
SUPER BOWL MVPs!: Stat Leaders in this game get the MVP title too. Tyler Jones 2
Passing TDs, 2 Receiving TDs, and an INT, and Todd Polczynski with 1 Passing TD,
2 Receiving TDs, 1 Rushing TD and a sack.
Notes: Are we done? Not necessarily. After the Thanksgiving weekend, I'll post
a message to see if there is any interest in a Saturday Afternoon edition of GE
Friday Night Football. Since we won't need the lights, and the field is first come
first serve, there is no cost for this game. Since the Super Bowl is over, this will
be called the Pro-Bowl. Enjoy your bye-week everyone, I know I need it...
