GEFNFL - 2007 Game Summaries
WEEK 1
It was not a high scoring affair, as we all missed training camp and needed to get the feel of it again.
Red had a slight edge early, Blue came back riding on the horse of 3 rushing touchdowns. Six drive killing
interceptions slowed the scoring down a bit. The bar was set pretty high, for a couple of our single game
stats, for the season. Rookie, Tony Melchior got 3 of the INTs, and veteran David Southgate got 2 of the
rushing touchdowns.
Dale Hauser went down with a knee injury while making a throw at QB. This caused the reshuffling of the
teams, that had Tom Sweinberg scoring for both teams. Dale tried for a comeback (I guess it was better
than arguing with the kids on the sidelines) but further scrambling as QB proved to be too much. Dale
reluctantly had to bow out.
With the teams now at 6 on 6, your Red & Blue warriors continued to fight it out. During that battle,
when Blue was driving down to the goal, Red was pretty sure that they had held them through a fourth down
and had the ball. Red huddles up in the end zone and calls a play. Blue does the same. Blue gets to
the line first and starts to run a play. Now everyone is confused and we stop the play. Red was unable
to quickly recall all of the plays after the first down and allowed Blue to play their fourth down. Later,
as we hashed it over the Red team was able to recall all the plays, not that it really made much difference
at that point. With the score tied 4 to 4, and getting later, we called for the last touchdown. A back
and forth battle ensued for about the next 1/2 hour before Blue got the go ahead score for the 5 to 4 win.
Play of the Day: Dale Hauser throws a hot pass about 15 yards down the middle at David Southgate, who is
racing from the left to the right side of the field on a square-in pattern. It hit Dave's hands and bobbles
around just as Adam Jung was also doing a square-in pattern, shorter and from the other side (right to the
left). Adam grabbed the bobbling ball out of Dave's hands and takes it up field for another 10 yards. A
well executed hook'n ladder, but completely unplanned. I'm pretty sure that Dave was going to get control
of the ball, but Adam didn't give him any time to try.
Stat Leaders: David Southgate with 1 Passing TD, 2 Rushing TDs and 2 INTs.
Injuries: Dale Hauser with a knee. (We could use an update Tamra? We'd like to know if he's OK.)
Official Bartender 2007: Michelle is in the front running but it remains to be seen if she is our regular
bartender at Mickey G's.

WEEK 2
This was a warm one with temperatures solidly in the 80s. We had another great turn out of 13 players,
for 7 on 6, with Red rotating one guy which help keep the A-team of of the field again. Tom Sweinberg
threw a few balls to one kid who does seem to have pretty good hands. Fan count of 11, A-Team, the Polcynski
family cheerleading squad, and 3 others.
We seem to be recruiting heavily from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design as we now have 3-4 players from
there I think. The sides came out pretty even again, providing a little back and forth battling in the
score. The lead never got more than a touchdown out of reach for either team. When we turned on the lights
about halfway through the game was like turning on the "buffet light" for the mosquitoes. They descended on
us with a vengeance, making up for the meals they missed last week, and forcing us to keep the huddles short.
Once again we tied the game a 4 to 4 going into playing for the last touchdown. Blue got the go ahead score
for the 5 to 4 win.
Play of the Day: I remember only one special play. It was a Wayne Schott throw to Tyler Jones on a 10 yard
"hook'n go". I got it out to him a little late on the "hook" because he was about to do the "go". The pass
was high and to the left but he chased it. About this time, the 2 defenders reacted from opposite sides of
the field and quickly closed in on his position going for an interception. The two defenders collided with a
loud hollow chest thump, and dropped to the turf, allowing Tyler to make a move outside and scamper the next
25 yards or so to the end zone. Tyler is doing a good job of making me look good this year.
Stat Leaders: Tyler Jones with 1 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs and 1 INT.
Injuries: Matt Panelli was hobbled most (or all) of the game with a pulled hamstring.
Official Bartender 2007: It's official! Michelle is the official bartender of the GEFNFL this year, by
unanimous vote. I even updated the web to include her in the Official Bartenders section. She joins an
excellent group of ladies.
I'm having some trouble keeping lately. Especially if I throw an interception. I had to make corrections
to last week's record giving Jay an interception. I threw one this week that I'm not sure I got recorded.
So feel free to correct me.

WEEK 3
This game was played in moderate temperatures with only a short period of mosquito activity before it cooled
off too much for them. We started out with 15 players, and played 7 on 7, with Red rotating one guy, but a
late comer made it a total 16 players, but we limited the teams to 7 on 7 and rotated a guy on both sides.
The large player turnout translated into a record breaking fan turnout, with the total fan count of 21,
including Dave Dubberstein (still on IR), the A-Team (who had to give up the field for the paying GEFNFL
players, and even tried to ditch one of my footballs prior to the game), a few Cuske kids, Cindy Drewicz
and some of the Reeds.
My streak of balancing the teams evenly, ended on this game, as I have to add, yet another variable into
the mental calculations that I do when setting up the teams. Apparently, I need to take into account the
number of fully functional hamstrings per player. Normally, it's the number of players per side, times two.
But Red seemed to be short at least 2 hamstrings in this contest. They do however, deserve some credit for
sticking with it, for the entire game.
We started out with 2 rookies this week, Doug Redd & David Cuske, and as I explained to them they are only
rookies for one game. We don't play enough games to give them any more time than that, to be rookies.
Blue jumped out to an early 2 to 0 lead and never looked back. Red struggled throwing the ball with so many
players on the field, at least when it came to throwing to their own players. Blue seemed to adapt to the
crowded field, a little better than Red, they directed traffic and got the job done, on most drives. Many
of Blue's passes were right on target. Seven Red drives ended on interceptions, making it very difficult for
them to get back into the game. We like ending the game on a touchdown, so on the final score, Blue was in
a commanding lead of 9 to 4 for the win.
Play of the Day: Again I'm having difficulty remembering only one special play. So how about any of Tony
Melchior's six interceptions in this one game! It's hard to be in the right place even a couple times a
game, but Tony manged to do it successfully six times on defense.
Stat Leaders: Tony Melchior with 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TDs and a single game record setting 6 INTs. The
single game interception record was previously held by Todd Miller (2000) and Dave Dubberstein (2006)
Injuries: Matt Panelli was out(hamstring), Martin Vertacnik (hamstring), Ryan Manteufel (hamstring), Mark
Schieber (hamstring)
Lost'n Found: 1 pair of blue sweat pants, 1 orange football tee.
Official Bartender 2007: Michelle has graciously accepted the title for the year. And, now that she knows
that we are football players and not just watching football on Friday night, she may even check out our web
site. http://www.wschott.com/gefnfl/index.htm
Corrections from Week 2: I'm still not in mid season form with the stats. I had to add corrections to last
week's record giving Jay an interception. I threw one this week that I'm not sure I got recorded. So feel

WEEK 4
This game was played in moderate temperatures. It was our weakest showing of 8 players, and played 4 on 4.
I balanced the teams more evenly this week, with 7 good legs on each team. The fan turnout exceeded the
number of players, with the total fan count of 9.
A low player turn out usually translates into more repetitions at QB, and more stats per player. This week
was no exception to that rule. After a couple of weeks with high interception rates, there was only one
recorded this week, and that one went for a touchdown. So, every drive either ended with a TD or was turned
over on downs. Blue got the edge early and never gave it up, however Red never was out of it, closing the
gap to within one TD, at least once. I remember a couple times checking stats, just to see whose turn it
was to get a TD. Red was again trying to close the gap as we were getting late in the game and didn't want
to play for last TD until they were closer, but another Blue TD put it out of reach. So by the time Dave
Dubberstein caught the game ending interception for a touchdown, to put Blue in the commanding lead of 9 to 6
for the win.
Plays of the Day: I had already decided on the play of the day, then the interception for a TD last play of
the game deserved equal mention. So I have two plays.
The first play was the Banana Play (thank you Bill Ray) that worked, once again! On 1st down from our own 40,
Wayne Schott calls a "Trips Right" (overloading all receivers to the right) and sends them on banana routes
(curved) to the left. David Southgate, who was the center and the farthest left on the line was sent on a
slant right behind the other receivers. The 10 yard Schott pass, got out to Southgate around 50 yardline, as
he took it down the right sidelines, picking his way through the defenders, slanting to the middle for the TD.
(Matt Panelli was heard telling Southgate to stop coloring his hair gray, because he must really be
only 25 years old.) The second play was Dave Dubberstein's pick-off of a Red pass as we were playing out the
last touchdown. Red was backed up near there own endzone. Dave picked of the pass around the 35 yardline
and returned it the distance for the final TD. This pushed Dubberstein above Southgate & Schott who at that
point had been running neck and neck for the Stat Leader title. So much for Dave's torn leg muscles.
Stat Leaders: Dave Dubberstein with 1 Passing TD, 3 Receiving TDs and 1 INT for a TD. Apparently he held
himself out on IR long enough.
Injuries: Martin Vertacnik (hamstring), Ryan Manteufel (hamstring), Mark Schieber (hamstring)
Lost'n Found: 1 Wilson Football (But I think I forgot to bring it today), 1 pair of blue sweat pants, &
1 orange football tee.
Official Bartender 2007: With Michelle's kind permission, I was able to update her page on the GEFNFL web
site with a picture or two. She was constantly deleting the pictures she didn't like, until she saw one in
the style of "Wilson" from "Home Improvement". She has promised to send me a "better" picture to use.

WEEK 5
This game was played in moderate temperatures and this was the first game that it was dark enough to have
to start the game with the lights on. We had 10 players for a 5 on 5 game, until late in the game when
injuries forced us to play 4 on 4 for the last half an hour. The fan turnout was low around 3 or so, I guess
the A-team can't stay out in the dark. The Operation Football Helicopter made 2 passes over our field to
check out the action, they were probably looking for a high school game. So if you thought you saw you
favorite GEFNFL Warriors on the TV News, Friday night, you might have been right, it could have been us.
This would seem to have been Red's revenge. With the assistance of 6 interceptions (at least one by every
player, including one for a TD), Red was able to keep Blue out of the endzone for most of the game. Almost
everything was working for Red. Red had to twist Andy's arm to play QB, starting from his own 5 yard line
(because that's how far he returned the kick off), and told him to run every down. He almost did. In three
running plays he had made a first down (unlike the Packers against the Bears), then he threw one complete
short pass and and ran the remaining plays down to about the 2 yard line. He called a pass to the center
and set everyone out on the final play, but it opened up in the middle so he ran that one straight in.
Late in the game Tom Sweinberg went down with a severe calf muscle cramp (or was it a severe need to go on
a bar hopping, limo ride with his buddies), Dave Dubberstein also dropped out at that time, still nursing
that soccer injury from this summer, and playing it on the safe side. Final Score; Red 8 - Blue 3.
Play of the Day: Andy Saugstad's 40 yard interception returned for a touchdown. It's fun to watch that
kid run. A close runner up was Wayne Schott's catch of a 20 yard bullet...with his chin. Nah, the
interception for a TD wins hands down.
Stat Leaders: There were 4 people with 4 stats on the night. I'd rank them in this this order:
Andy Saugstad: 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD, 1 Rushing TD, and 1 INT for a TD
Tom Sweinberg: 2 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD, and 1 INT
Dave Dubberstein: 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD, and 2 INT
Wayne Schott: 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD, 1 INT, and a Sack
Injuries: Tom Sweinberg (severe calf muscle cramp), Martin Vertacnik (hamstring), Ryan Manteufel (hamstring),
Mark Schieber (hamstring), Matt Panelli (knee & shoulder)
Lost'n Found: 1 Wilson Football (Matt), 1 pair of blue sweat pants (Tony), & 1 orange football tee.
Official Bartender 2007: Michelle was not present to serve refreshments Friday, but she sent her friend Ali
to cover for her. Ali joined our fan list, after see determined that Norm & I were harmless.

WEEK 6
After a few days of rain, light rain most of the day, and low player count. I thought this one was going to
be cancelled. But when I threated to cancel, 4 more players signed on and suddenly we had a game. The fan
turnout extremely low, one smoker who stopped by to watch a couple of series. Prairie School was having a
Halloween party, but none of them ventured out to the football field. The Operation Football Helicopter
made 2 quick passes over our field, but didn't slow down or hover to check out the action, like they did
last week.
Cesar Dorantes was our rookie on the field for week 6. I forgot to explain to him that he only gets to be
a rookie for one game. Our seasons are to short to be a rookie all season. He had a nice catch that put
him on the stat board.
Rich Kelnhofer get the Edgar Award for almost picking of my 4th down pass at the 1st down marker. This Award
gets pulled out for outstanding effort on plays that were for some reason, not successful. This was likely
to be Rich's last game of the season, as he now turn his attention to coaching his kid's team on Friday night.
Blue scored first and held on to that slender one touchdown lead until about half time when Red came back
and took the lead. Not exactly a high scoring affair, there was a lot of back and forth drives that went
scoreless. The muddy field provided some unorthodox plays, like Wayne Schott rushing for about 15 yards on
two back to back quarterback keepers against defender Tyler Jones. (Not even remotely possible on a dry
track.) Red even had a 4th down play that had multiple pitch backs that I can't even pretend to remember
accurately. Dave "I have a torn leg muscle" Dubberstein made a nice, down on the knees, low, and fast, from
the outside, toward the middle of the goal line, catch for a TD.
By the end of 4th quarter we had it all tied up at 4 to 4. Red snagged the final touchdown with a nice
30 yard, Tom Sweinberg pass to Tyler Jones, to get the win for Red. Final Score: Red 5 - Blue 4.
Play of the Day: From about the 35 yard line, Adam Jung scrambles left then right. Having been caught
throwing past the line of scrimmage once already, he makes this throw very close to the line again. Up the
right sideline to Tony Melchior at about the 10 yard line. Since Adam was running in the direction of the
throw, he continued down the sideline to help, if needed. As it turned out Tony was getting caught up in
traffic and pitched back to Adam charging down the right sideline.
Stat Leaders: There were 2 players with 4 stats on the night. I'd rank them in this this order:
Tom Sweinberg: 2 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TD, and 1 INT
Tyler Jones: 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD, 1 INT, and a Sack
Injuries: Ryan Manteufel (hamstring), Mark Schieber (hamstring)
Lost'n Found: 1 orange football tee.
Official Bartender 2007: Michelle has switched to an earlier shift, so we (The GEFNFL Steering Committee)
nominated Ali serve as Official Bartender for the last half of the season. Don't try to drink this young
Irish lady under the table or you will end up like the guy in the parking lot last week. Allie's page,

WEEK 7
The field was dry despite rain, earlier in the day. It started out cool, but seemed to warm up, as it got
later, maybe as much as 10 degrees. We had a player turnout of 10 for a 5 on 5 game. Our fans must be fair
weather fans, as there was no turnout.
This game was a slow starter. After the opening kick off, with the ball spotted on Red's own 40 yardline,
it stayed in the same spot for the next 7 downs. Red couldn't move it in 4 plays and turned it over on downs,
and Blue didn't move it for the next 3 plays. For several plays after that, it only moved on rushing downs,
with the first completed pass occurring something like 12 plays into the game. For that matter the first
touchdown, for each team, was a rushing touchdown. Red got out to a 2 to 1 lead before losing Tony Melchior
to a pulled quadraceps. Like the GEFNFL Warrior that he is, he played on in a limited capacity, but Red
never scored again. It wasn't for lack of opportunities, but I am reminded of several David Southgate's knock
downs of passes in the end zone. Red even had the only interception of the game. Blue, however, was much
more successful at punching it into the endzone.
This was Steve Dubberstein's first game of the year and he sort of got of to a rocky start. He made up for
this with a strong finish. He had a nice TD catch near the end of the game. This must have fired him up some,
because on Blue's next drive (the final drive of the game), he quarterbacked for a 99 yard drive that ended
with a niffty pass from Steve Dubberstein to David Southgate. Blue was in a very commanding lead at that
time. Final Score: Blue 7 - Red 2.
Plays of the Day: I have 2 of them this week.
From his own 40 yard line David Southgate stepped back to pass, side stepping the pass rush as his receivers
took most of the defenders down field. Southgate takes off running, weaving through the blocks of his
receivers for a 60 yard touchdown run. Long rushing TDs are very difficult to get in this game, so I'd rank
it higher than the next play.
On his first quarterback play from scrimmage, on his own 20, Wayne Schott called 2 deep slants from right to
left, and a short very sharp slant from left to right behind them. The shorter slant started too wide and
took too long to get across the middle field, by then, Ryan August gotten clear on the deep left side.
Worried the Ryan was nearly at the limit of his throwing range, Schott launches it. Ryan makes the grab
and takes it another 30+ yards for an 80 yard touchdown pass, on a one play drive.
Stat Leaders: David Dubberstein with 2 Passing TDs, 2 Receiving TD, and a Sack
Injuries: Tony Melchior(Quadraceps), Mark Schieber (hamstring)
Lost'n Found: 1 orange football tee. (I'm going to claim this after this week)
Official Bartender 2007: Ali tried to supply me with more information to fill in the fields on her page.
But when she was telling us her favorite shot, I thought she meant her favorite Schott. So, I lost that
information, my bad.

WEEK 8
A bit cooler than we have seen, we weren't wearing heavy clothes, but we weren't wearing shorts either.
It's now dark enough to require lights the entire time we are out there, from warm-ups to the final TD.
We had a player turnout of 10 for a 5 on 5 game. Our fans must be fair weather fans, as there was no
turnout. One drive by honking.
Blue got the early start getting ahead by a couple of touchdowns. I could be wrong, but my impression is
that Red was not calling specific routes, at least until Tom Sweinberg got them to settle down and run some
more stuctured plays. At this point, Red got back into the game closing the gap at one point to Red 3 to
Blue 4. For the second week in a row, Tom Sweinberg was pancaked by a collison with Wayne Schott, something
I don't recommend he make into a habit. Blue kept the lead throughout the game, gaining more of a lead as
Red did a couple of long drives, that turned over on downs. The game ender was the Tyler Jones' 90 yard
touchdown pass detailed below in the Plays of the day. Final Score: Blue 7 - Red 4.
Plays of the Day: I have 2 of them, again.
Adam Jung's tip of one of Blue's mid-field pass, on the left flat, then making the one handed interception
as he cleared the intended reciever, and taking it 45 yards for the touchdown.
Starting from Blue's own own 10 yard line, while playing for last touchdown, Tyler Jone calls a double cross
pattern play (I've heard it called a siccors play). Dave & Steve Dubberstein both lined up on the right, as
they go out, they cross at 7 yards out, and again at about 15 yards. Tyler hits David Duberstein who then
takes it the distance for the 90 yard touchdown.
Stat Leaders: David "Wayne has too many TDs this year" Dubberstein with 3 Passing TDs, 3 Receiving TD, and
an interception.
Injuries: Tony Melchior(Quadraceps), Mark Schieber (hamstring)
Official Bartender 2007: Ali's favorite shot is snakebite (Yukon Jack & lime juice). She was working on 2
hours of sleep, didn't want to be there. Tom & I encouraged her to close Mickey's early, she did
around 12:00.

WEEK 9 - Rainout
Week 10
Another cool one, we are starting to see more receivers' gloves getting used. We had an excellent player
turnout of 12 for a 6 on 6 game. One fan showed up, only long enough to use the pota-poti (Which is included
from Waukesha Park & Rec., as part of the field costs. I'm not sure if it will still be there for Week 10),
and one post game drive by honking. (Yes, people really drive by and honk their horn at us.)
Welcome to rookie, Mark Ntka, who with 1 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TD, made a nice showing. I hope to see
him on the field again. He is a deer hunter, so unless we play a post season Saturday game, it may not be
until next year. (Actually, we are considering a Sat. Dec 1, 10:00 AM game.)
This game started out with 4 long scoring drives that chewed up much of the clock, for a 2 to 2 score. Red
turned the next series over on downs, and remained at least one score down for the remainder of the game.
Long drives were the rule for the bulk of the game. Even when a drive was cut short by an interception,
it was very late in the series and near or in the end zone. Red had the ball on their own 15 and was down
by two, when we checked the clock and were surprised to find out it was 8:20 PM. It was somewhat late and
time to play for last touchdown. At the end on yet another long drive, on a short Mark Ntya pass to David
"I didn't say that" Dubberstein, and between hands of two very close defenders, Red pulled with within one
touchdown of the lead for a final score of: Blue 5 - Red 4.
Plays of the Day: I have 2 of them, again. These were both difficult plays, because these types of plays
are hard to execute cold. That is to say, without any practice, drawing it up in the huddle, and getting
the timing right. Both of these were very well executed, and looked like they were practiced plays.
It's hard to describe this play, without including the previous play, which it set up. Ceasar Dorantes was
in the mood to call back to back running plays. So first, he sets up trips right (overloading the right side)
and runs a sweep to the right for 10 yards. On the next play the defense makes an adjustment, by getting
tighter to the line and covering the overloaded right side. He starts to run right and pitches back to
David Southgate going the opposit direction. Dave takes it up field for about 20 yards, double the distance
of the first play.
David Southgate completes a pass to Ceasar Dorantes 10 yards down field on the left side. David contiues
running left and up the sidelines. Cesar takes it a few steps as the defense closed in on him, then he
pitched it to the oncoming Southgate, who then gets 10 more yards out of it.
Stat Leaders: Ryan August with 1 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs, and an interception.
Injuries: Tony Melchior(Quadraceps), Mark Schieber (hamstring)
Official Bartender 2007: A season record of player made to Mickey's for the post game festivities.
FOUR players showed up! I thought Ali was going to pass out.
