GEFNFL - 2008 Game Summaries

WEEK 1

Opening day for the GEFNFL season was a surprising cool damp evening. We started out with 6 on 6,
after about 40 minutes Bryan Edwards showed up with 4 GE Field Engineers who were in town for
training at the Ed Center. Stefano Mazzanti from Italy choose to act as staff photographer, and
the rest joined the game making it 8 on 8. Greg Lesco & Mike Pushman were here from Canada, and
Martin Friedrich came all the way from Muenchen Germany. Martin traveled roughly 4400 miles,
making it the longest commute for a GEFNFL player ever. Stefano traveled about 4800 miles to be
a fan, and stuck it out through the rain for the entire game. So, I don't want to here anymore
complaints about having to drive all the way to Waukesha from fans or players.

It was not a high scoring affair. Red scored first, but Blue regained the lead with the next
two scores. About the time the roster to increased to 8 and 8, the rain started. It slowly
increased from a mist to a steady drizzle that dripped from the rim of my baseball hat by the
end of the game. The field and ball got quite slippery, and the scoring slowed to a crawl.
Apparently, turf shoes are not in any of the field Engineers' tool kit. Red tied it up and
got the go ahead score for the 3 to 2 win with the final TD which was the Play of the Day.

Play of the Day: It was the final TD was a 60+ yard pass from Tony Melchior to Adam Jung.

Stat Leaders: Adam Jung with 2 Receiving TDs and 1 Sack.

Official Bartender 2008: Jessie may be our 2008 bartender, but to our surprise Claudia (Our
2 time official bartender) showed up as a customer at Mickey G's

The stat sheet was soaked by the end of the game so it took a good drying out before it was readable again.

Note on scoring for our visitors: We play pretty much for touchdowns. With no extra points or
field goals we just count the touchdowns (TD). Player get credit for throwing(PASS TD) and catching(REC TD)
a touchdown, but the team only gets one TD. Interceptions (INT) and sacks are recorded for the fun of it.

WEEK 2

It was very nice, warm, clear, evening for football. We started out with 7 on 7, but
dwindled down to 5 on 5, as injuries & departures thinned the ranks by the end of our
late running game. Fan count was around 10, including Polczynski family, tennis players,
and generally more activity in the park.

After trading touchdowns to start, Blue took the lead and never gave it back. Blue's Adam
Jung joined the ranks of only four other players that have scored a safety in the GEFNFL.
He scored this 1/3 point by virtue of being the designated rusher on a play where Red's
QB dropped the snap in the end zone. There was a lot more scoring this week's game, with
several long successful TD passes, that were beautifully executed. I think at one point
the lead was as much as 4 1/3 touchdowns. Red started matching TDs later in the games,
and with an extra touchdown, made it a more respectable showing. Final score Blue 8 1/3,
Red 5.

I've been getting great comments back from some of the new guys that have joined us this
year. Sometimes I forget what a unique setup we have going here, thanks for welcoming
the rookies into our game. You guys are great.

Play of the Day: Was a 45+ yard TD pass from Tony Melchior, through the Red defender's hands,
popped back up by Todd Miller reaching back with a right hand, who then made the diving catch
to his left in the end zone.

Stat Leaders: A tie between Tyler Jones with 3 Passing TDs, 1 Receiving TD and 1 Sack and
Todd Miller with 1 Passing TD, 3 Receiving TDs and 1 INT.

Injuries: David Southgate turned an ankle in the end zone, early in the game, Tim Audley
pulled a hamstring on a running play, and due to a sprained ring finger on a long muffed pass,
Wayne Schott had to have his wedding ring cut off the following day. (Yes, I have visual aids.)

Official Bartender 2008: Jessie was a God-send, providing ice water for my sprained finger and
beer for Southgate and myself.

WEEK 3

Another beautiful night for football. The game started on time, even though we had some
technical difficulties, so Waukesha Park & Rec had to operate the stadium lights for us.
The control box was not working so they had to come to throw the breakers manually. We
put 15 players on the field, and played 7 on 6 with Red swapping a player out for most
game. I estimate the fan count at around 10.
We welcomed yet another rookie to our roster, as Jon Donnan was in the area for his National
Guard service. Thanks him for that service, hopefully we will get to see him on the football
field again.

Blue had difficulty getting out of bad field position early and Red took advantage of that.
While Red was making great catches, Blue struggled with catching the ball on offense, dropping
at least 3 in the end zone. It didn't seem to be a problem on defense though, as Blue lead the
pick parade with 6 interceptions, which probably prevented an even more lop-sided resulting
score. Red won the contest by 5 to 3.

Plays of the Day: I forgot who threw the pass in the middle for the first down, because Red
had 5 different quarterbacks throwing TDs, but the catch by Todd Polcynski as he got sandwiched
by two Blue defensive backs was an outstanding play. Also, Dave Dubberstein threw a nice
40+ yard touchdown pass to Wayne Schott just inches ahead of the Red defender.

Stat Leaders: Tony Melchior with 1 Passing TD, 3 Receiving TDs and Followed closely by Todd
Polcynski with 1 Passing TD, 2 Receiving TDs and 1 INT.

WEEK 4

Clear cool night for football that got cooler as the game progressed, during the last half
of the game we could see our own breath. Waukesha Park & Rec is still operating the stadium
lights for us. We put 9-10 players on the field, and played 5 on 4 with 5 on defense most
of the game, this created a rotating man from one side to the other. I estimate the fan
count at around 8. Because of the player rotations, everyone ended up playing on both teams at one point or another.
There was a little overlap before Tyler left when Jon showed up making it 5 on 5 for about
15 minutes. If you thought my stat keeping was complicated, wait until check these out. I
tried to give each player their stats, for the team they were on at the time. Given my track
record this year for corrections, I'm making no promises this week will be any better.

We played with an extra man on the defense, but went to a "5 banana" count for the delayed rush
to give the offense a little more time. The extra time helped the offense about the same as
the extra man helped the defense. The rotating of players from one side to the other probably
had a bigger impact on the game results. Not that the team loyalty mattered much, but Blue won
the contest with a 6 to 4 score.

Plays of the Day: I have three of them: First, there was Adam Jung's long back & forth scramble
behind the line of scrimmage as QB from about the 20 yard, finding time to loft a high pass to
the center of the end zone for the awaiting Dave Dubberstein. Then, there was Todd Polcynski's
sweep right run for 40+ yards dodging tackles until the end zone. And finally, there was a Dave
Dubberstein catch of a 10 yard Wayne Schott pass from about the 50, but it wasn't the pass or the
catch, it was the yards after the catch. He was on a shallow slant pattern to the right but cut
it to the center splitting the defenders for the remaining 40 yard and the TD.

Stat Leaders: Tony Melchior with 2 Passing TD, 3 Receiving TDs and 2 INTs. Followed closely by
Dave Dubberstein with 2 Passing TDs, 3 Receiving TDs and 1 Sack.

WEEK 5

Wow, this is hard to do when I am so late getting around to it.

Clear cool night for football that got cooler as the game progressed, during the last
half of the game we could see our own breath. Waukesha Park & Rec is still operating
the stadium lights for us. We started out with 5 on 5, a late comer made it 6 on 5
with Blue rotating a man. Then an early departure on Red allowed them to pick a player
from Blue's roster. This is why Dave Dubberstein is in both teams. I estimate the fan
count at around 6.

My attempt to balance the teams was not very successful. I didn't account for rookie
Hia Duong, and Steve Dubberstein & John Bopp having their best games. Blue had got the
early lead and never looked back. Even with Blue doing the rotating man thing and allowing
Dave Dubberstein to be traded to the other team half way through the game, it seemed like
they could do no wrong. At one point on a 4th down and short yardage to the goal, Blue's
quarterback found Steve (having a career day) Dubberstein all alone on the left side of the
end zone for one of his 4 touchdowns. The battle of the brothers continued as Dave's
contribution to Red's score was not insignificant. Dave doubled Red's touchdown total,
throwing one and returning an interception for a TD. Still, Blue easily won the contest
with a 10 to 4 score.

Plays of the Day: Either of these plays would have made the play of the day because these
tend to be rare GEFNFL occurrences. There was Dave Dubberstein's jumping of a pass route
for an interception at about the 40 yard line returned it for a touchdown. And there was
the Hai Duong kick off return for a touchdown, with a slight hesitation maneuvering through
the traffic near the 40 yard line, he burst across the 50 yard line, usually a rookie mistake,
but took it the distance for the touchdown.

Stat Leaders: Todd Miller with 3 Passing TD, 1 Receiving TDs, 2 INTs and a Sack.

WEEK 6 - The Alumni Game

The weather looked like it wasn't going to cooperate with us, it was raining pretty heavy
when we go there and we were worried that Waukesha Park and Rec. wasn't going to turn the
lights on for us, but they did. It somehow, magically, the rained stopped, when the lights
came on. We had twelve players for six on six game. Bill Ray and Cliff Pautz showed to
oversee the game. The Alumni provided the only fan support we were going to see tonight.

Alumni turnout:
  Bill Ray - fan
  Cliff Pautz - fan
  Lew Krisberg - player
  Gary Sima - player
  Tom Sweinberg - player
  Wayne Schott - player
Bill Ray Jr. - Beer Drinker
  Kyle Hecker - Beer Drinker

With the wet field, this quickly turned into a defensive struggle. Early in the game Ryan
August scored a safety making it nearly impossible to get a tied game. It was, however,
very evenly matched, and not without it's offensive highlights. To honor the Alumni, several
plays were run from their playbook. The "Banana Play" was run at least twice, despite Dave
Dubberstein sniffing it out on one of the plays. Wayne Schott called the "Ed West Play" for
Alumni Lew Krisberg where he falls down and gets back up for a short yardage touchdown. Tyler
Jones even ran a "Down-out-and-down Play" for a 50 yard touchdown. Yes there was some heckling,
but it was much deserved. About two hours into the game, the score was 3 to 3 1/3 when Red
went on a two touchdown rally making the final score 5 to 3 1/3.

Bill and Cliff left early to go to Sporty's but due to some key fumbling ended up getting there
about the time we did.

I hope my good buddy Lew was okay, he played the whole game when he was expecting to get sub'd
out for a break once it a while. At age 57 he breaks the record for the most senior player, and
added a touchdown reception to his stats as well.

The Play of the Day: Hai Duong's 40 yard pass to Dave Dubberstein in the back of the end zone.
The pass came in high and long. Dave with his heels near the back end of the end zone, jumped
up and stopped the ball from going out of play, he tipped it to himself, and caught it while
falling backwards, keeping his heels in the end zone for the touchdown.

Stat Leader: Hai Duong with 1 TD pass, 2 TD receptions, and 1 interception. Bryan Edwards set
the mark for single game sacks at three. Ryan August joins the ranks of those who have scored
a safety.

Story of the Day: Cliff Pautz told this story of the day this league started, rather than returning
to the brutal GE Intermural league. Bill Ray knocks on Cliff's door one Sunday in 1977 and says
he wants to play football over at Glen Park. So Cliff figures there's a bunch of guys there and
heads over to Glen Park with Bill. When he gets there, he finds out that it's just him and Bill.
This was to be the first game of what was to become the GEFNFL. Cliff kicks off Bill in what was
to be a 1 on 1 game (And I hate to less than 4 on 4). So Cliff thinks, 'How is this going to work?'.
After the kick off, it was Bill's ball so Cliff is thinking 'Okay he's going to run right or he's
going to run left.' So Bill asks Cliff to hike it for him. Cliff says, "Okay." and hikes it.
Bill fades back to pass. So Cliff thinks, 'Now what?'. Bill throws the ball high and starts to run
underneath it. Bill actually catches it, but for a loss. (Gee didn't Brett Farve do something like
that too?) After that first play, Bill puts the ball down, and walks into the back field away from
the line-of-scrimmage, and Cliff says something like, "Where are you going now?" Bill just replies,
"I'm going to the huddle.", and turns his back to Cliff to call his next play.

WEEK 7 - Game Summary

We had a slightly cool evening for a game. Waukesha Park and Rec. is still operating the lights
and so we didn't have control of the end of our game, yes, we would have played longer. We had
twelve players for 6 on 6 game. Besides the dozens of ghosts & goblins from the Prairie Park
School Halloween Party, the fan support was limited to 3 kids who took advantage of our lights
to extend their playtime.

The trend for defensive struggles continues. This Blue & Red Battle was held scoreless until
well into the 3rd quarter. In fact the only stats up to that point were a pair of interceptions
by Wayne Schott and Ryan August. The scoreless game was finally broken with a defensive score
by Tom Sweinberg on a interception for a TD.

It's hard to say that the scoring opened up in the 4th quarter because only three more TDs were
scored. For Blue, rookie Leonard Davis threw one to Dave Dubberstein who picked his way through
30 yards of defenders for the TD, and Tom Sweinberg hit Dave Dubberstein for the final Blue score
tipped once by a defender, again by Dave and with serious concentration, grabbed it on the way down.
Red picked up their only score, on a Ryan August to Ryan Andersen pass. By the end of the game we
had made only one rotation through quarterbacks on the Blue team, so there had been only 6-7 drives
the entire game per team. Usually everyone gets to quarterback 2 to 3 times, so even though many
drives were scoreless, they seemed to be fairly long drives. The final score was Blue 3 to Red 1.

The Play of the Day: I'd say it was the Tom Sweinberg interception returned for a TD on a jumped
route near the 20 yard line. It looked like he saw it the whole time and quickly turned the
pick-off into a touchdown.

Stat Leader: Dave Dubberstein with 2 TD receptions.

WEEK 8 - Game Summary

A beautiful night for football. I had trouble getting 8 people to respond YES to get enough
player for this game but, ended up 12 players anyway for a 6 on 6 game. Once again, Waukesha
Park and Rec. was still operating the lights and we didn't have control of the end of our game.
Waukesha was still doing Halloween, so there were dozens of people on the streets but only a
half dozen giggling ghouls crossed our field to be part of our fan count.

We had 3 rookies, Matt, Pietro, and Willie, join us even this late in the season, now that
their rookie game is over, they can join us a veterans. (I still need some of those last names
and e-mail addresses.) On the other end of the spectrum, this was my 99th consecutive game,
so I'm glad we can still get new blood into this game.

Scoring is still difficult, as the trend for defensive struggles, continues. Once again the
rotation through quarterbacks was a bit short, only a few QBs got a second attempt. By late
in the game Red and Blue had fought it out to a 2 to 2 tie until the Play of the Day, detailed
below, gave Red a one touchdown lead. The final score was Red 3 to Blue 2.

The Play of the Day: Given the number of drives that ended with failed short yardage plays
for a touch down, I'm giving the nod to Tony Melchior's run to the right side, and throwing
back to the left side screen pass to Tom Sweinberg. The screen was beautifully set up with
ead blockers and everything.

Stat Leaders: Tied with Tyler Jones and his 2 TD Passes and Tony Melchior with 1 TD Pass and
1 TD Reception.

WEEK 9 - Game Summary

This one was a bit cold to start with but as we played everyone seemed to warm up. At one
point we had a snow squall pass though but it didn't last long. I was expecting 8 players
but we started out with only 6 for a 3 on 3 game. Waukesha Park and Rec. showed up and we
convinced them that we could get by with only the 2 lights per tower that we were able to
control, and that he didn't need to return to shut us down. Not many people around to be
part of our fan count, but we did have a drive-by bombing, as a pack of firecrackers was
tossed from a car.

We started out with 3 on 3, which tends to require a man-to-man defense, most of the time.
The first play from scrimmage went for a Red touchdown and we were off to the races. The game
quickly became a barn burner. Soon Leonard Davis showed up, so we had him play as the fourth
man on offense, bouncing him back and forth to each team, on each turn over of downs. With 4
on 3 we played with no rushing, and about a 5 second release time on passing. All the
quarterbacks used a quick release, so there were no excessively long drop backs.

The game was also punctuated by 2 kick-off returns for a touchdown (one by Ryan Andersen the
other by Pietro Norante), and one 99 yard interception for a touchdown by Pietro. We are
close to finding the secret to high scoring games, it is either man-to-man defense or too few
players to cover the field, or perhaps both. Before it was all said an done, there were 15
touchdowns scored, that's more than the last 2 and a half games combined. There wasn't a moment
that a TD couldn't be scored. When we called for last touchdown, Pietro returned his kick for
a TD, so we called for another last touchdown to end the game answered by Blue. The final score
was Red 9 to Blue 6.

The Play of the Day: The interception by Pietro Norante, where he cut off the pass at the
1 yard line and launched himself through the offense now turned defense, to go the 99 yard
distance for the touchdown.

Stat Leaders: Pietro Norante with 1 TD Pass, 2 TD Receptions, 2 Rushing TDs (one was a Kick-off
return) 1 INT and 1 INT for a touchdown. This was followed closely by Tom Sweinberg with
3 TD Passes and 2 TD Receptions.

Note: This was Wayne Schott's 100th concecutive game.

WEEK 10 - Game Summary

A surprisingly nice evening for a football game as we were expecting a strong cold front that
got there too late to matter. We had 15 players (including 4 rookies) for a 8 on 7 game, with
Red rotating a guy. We ran with only the 2 lights per tower that we were able to control, so
we were in control of the end game, not that it mattered. The fan count was a group of about
7 neighborhood guys that shoed up late and wanted in on our game. They were surprised that we
were actually running, called plays.

I'm going to absolve myself of the team dividing responsibilities on this one. We had 3 groups
of friends that wanted to play together, so I just made it happen. We ended up with a fairly
young Red team verses the long time veterans on the Blue Team. The exception to that rule were
Tom Sweinberg on Red and rookies Mike & Michael on Blue. Tyler Jones and rookie Mike Duffek
were going to leave early from the Blue team so we knew there would be a significant amount of
team shuffling as the night went on. When Blue lost those 2 players, they took rookie
Rex Betterly from Red and recruited one of the neighborhood kids by the name of Evan to keep
it a 7 on 7. The Neighborhood kid, unknowingly complimented us by asking if we played at Waukesha
West High School... It's been a long time since most of us have been confused with a High School
kids. Then he asked how long we'd been doing this. When I said since '77, he said he was
only 14 then... So I had to repeat, "1977, not 2007." There was a bit of a ghostly look on his
face as he did the math.

Once again the increase in the number of players and the use of zone defense seems to put a
huge damper on the scoring. I know my first drive at QB, ended on the first play with a Paul Vanschaick
interception. Then I think I cursed him, by telling him that it would be his last stat...and unless
I have an error, I think it was. But stats were hard to come by in this game, I didn't get any. After
trading touchdowns early in the game, Blue was the only team able to sneak a couple of more touchdown
into their score. Defense ruled the game, as Leonard Davis and Todd Polczynski split a sack on a muffed
snap, Michael had a sack that was inches from being a safety for Blue. Ryan Anderson got 2 sacks himself
for Red. There were 8 drive ending interceptions, but this favored the Blue Team which had 6 of them.
Try as we might, there was not score in the final hour and a half of this contest. Finally several
players had to leave and the game broke up without an ending TD. The final score was Red 1 to Blue 3.

The Play of the Day: I don't really have a play in my notes. But I do remember that Tom Sweinberg
settled down the Red team a bit and put together a nice drive with organized, well called plays, moved
them smoothly down field, and ended the drive in a nice corner of the end zone pass, to rookie Rex Betterly.

Hit of the Day: Wayne Schott for de-cleating a Red rusher with a block that put the pass rusher on
his back. He was a bit surprised, but otherwise okay after that play.

Stat Leaders: Dave Dubberstein with 1 TD Pass, 2 TD Receptions, and 1 INT.

WEEK 11 - Super Bowl Summary

Ouch, now this was a cold game, temperatures dipping into the low 20s. On the plus side, the ground
was too frozen for any mud to be sticking to our cleats. We had only 5 players for a 3 on 2 game,
with Leonard Davis as an all-time offense guy. We ran with only the 2 lights per tower that we were
able to control, so we were in control of the end game. The fan count for the Super Bowl was zero!
No wait there was one guy walking past our south end zone. We asked if he wanted to play, he declined,
apparently not aware of the history about to be made.

We had to quickly get on the field and moving, to stay warm, so we didn't wait for the one remaining
YES on the player's list. A 3 on 2 game means there is no running plays, a 5 count limit for passing
(which was stretched a little bit, but not too often). This also tends to a man-to man defense.
The game started with a rare, Wayne Schott kick return across the 50 yard line to the 25 yard line.
On the next play Dave Dubberstein threw him a TD pass. But on the next kick off, Tyler Jones returns
it the distance for a touchdown. This would be the first of 2 kick-off returns, Tyler would get during
this Super Bowl. In three plays and only one huddle, the score was already 1 to 1. We could hardly
maintain that pace, but yes, we were off to the races again, for what would be a 14 touchdown game.

As Red and Blue pounded it out, during the first half it was evident that most double move, pass patterns
had a pretty good shot at going the distance. You would think that after calling plays with
6-7 receivers most of the season, having only 2 receivers would be a piece of cake. The QBs were
digging deep trying to figure out creative ways to get his guys free. (The Banana Play can't be
run with only 2 receivers.) With Leonard going back and forth from Red to Blue, it was funny, but
not surprising to see your own plays being run right back at you on the next series. For the first
half, Blue and Red were matching each other touchdown for touchdown, the difference was that early
kick-off return by Tyler.

As high as the scoring was, there was a gap, centered around the third quarter where for nearly an
hour, the defenses ruled and there was no scoring. By now the defensive players were no longer biting
on the first move and waiting on the second move. At least that way if it went quick, the receiver
was still in front of you. Blue was even experimenting with the dreaded "2 Wide" zone defense during
that period.

You can argue if the back breaker in this game was Tyler's second kickoff return or the only
2 interceptions in the game by Paul Vanschaick, which gave Red it's 2 touchdown margin. The final
score was Red 8 to Blue 6.

The Plays of the Day: (I have one for Red and one for Blue.)

For Red it was Tyler Jone's second kick-off return for a touchdown. The ball dropped in at about
the 25. Tyler brings it up field to about the 40, but proper lane discipline by the defenders forces
him back to the 20. I over pursued and saw the grin on Tyler's face when he knew it. He knew which
way he was going to go, and I had no idea. A quick burst up the field and an outstanding block by
Paul Vanschaick around the 50 yard line, and Tyler was gone.

For Blue it was the pitch back play. Fourth and Goal from about the 49 yard line. Leonard Davis
throws one to Dave Dubberstein at about the 30. Wayne Schott was supposed to angle to the left
side behind Dave for the pitch, but the catch was shorter than he expected. Wayne had to hook
around behind Dave to get the pitch. Taking it across the field to the right side and up to
the 20. At this point Wayne missed the chance to pitch to Leonard and block for him, but turned
to pitch back to Dave, who took it left again and got it to the 15 yard line before getting tackled.
For Blue it meant not leaving Red one yard short of the first down marker.

Stat Leaders: Leonard Davis was technically the stat leader but with an asterisk * because he
was on offense all game, combining his Blue & Red scores we get 3 TD Passes, 6 TD Receptions.
(This is good news for Bill Ray because I can finally make some sketchy pre-stat records available
to compare to Leonard's effort.)

Tyler Jones also gets stat leader credit for his 3 TD Passes, 1 TD Reception, and 2 Rushing TDs
(both on kick-off returns).

Bartender?: No we didn't have one this year, and the last few games we dropped in on Sporty's.
It was in the bowling ally there, that I found this wanted poster. Did I have too many beers or
does this attached picture sort of look like Southgate?

Great Season everyone...I'll still see if there is interest in a Saturday game in December.
